Murderers don't usually go giving excuses for their crimes. I know Bundy blamed porn. But that was for a interview with a pastor. Serial killers don't go giving excuses unless they're trying for an insanity defense and then it to a psychologist. They usually know the excuses won't work although the psychologist might use their past as a reason for some mental incapacity. The psychologist isn't really looking for an "excuse" really but are asked to get a lighter charge or sentence. They usually blame everything on childhood so are looking to shift the blame or make someone else share it, rightly or wrongly. Indicators are indications of homicidal tendencies. The abusive childhood doesn't determine the possible killer. No indicators might be present as the person might have a normal upbringing. It doesn't mean he wasn't the homicidal type. His nature is basically the same, only the lifetime "stressors" were different and maybe they didn't come in early life. I believe in taking sole responsibility but that doesn't mean you are solely responsible. Nobody exists in a vacuum. I wish some others would take sole responsibility and go away for life too, even if they aren't solely responsible. What about Joseph DeAngelo yelling "I hate you, Bonnie" while he was attacking a woman?

"What about Joseph DeAngelo yelling "I hate you, Bonnie" while he was attacking a woman?"
Do you really think he was publicly excusing himself for his actions during the crime or setting up an excuse he could use in court later?
This to me is an indication of his real state of mind and inner drive to go ahead and murder and rape.
The problem with Indicators is that it suggests people are homicidal. Reducing them to mere excuses doesn't reduce the indications and or reduce culpability. An Indicator is not a justification. I killed because I wet my pants as a kid. I kill because I'm a frustrated artist.
It's "I'm a killer and I/we might have known I'd might become one because I wet the bed, killed animals, set fires, etc."
All Indicators are not a direct indication of Homicidal behavior anyway, I don't think. They're an Indication of something else that is an direct or indirect indication of being Homicidal...

When serial killers start killing, they don't think they'll ever get caught. When he was yelling, "I hate you, Bonnie," he was transferring his hatred for Bonnie to the innocent woman he was attacking. That's not something that he could use as a defense because it wouldn't prove that he was insane, just that he was a sadistic, vindictive bastard who took out his frustrations related to Bonnie on other women.
