Following is the primary clue for Mystery Location No. 90:

At first glance, the boxy old farmhouse in a rural area of a sparsely-populated state might seem like the ideal place to get away from it all. But stories have long circulated that because of an unfortunate incident that occurred one hard winter many years ago, the domicile, particularly the kitchen, is haunted by a restless spirit.

Each day, a new clue will be posted until someone names the location, providing the street address, city and state (or province/country if located outside the US) and an explanation as to how each clue applies to the location. If no one correctly names the location, the contest will end at midnight (Eastern time), Saturday, March 10, 2018. Please note, the contest ends at midnight in the Eastern Time Zone. If you live in a different time zone, please make adjustments so you will know what time it ends where you are.

You may discuss the location with other members by posting your comments using the “reply” option, but please do not attempt to name the location until you are absolutely certain of your answer and able to post the street address, city, state, etc., along with a photo, or link to a photo, of the Location.

For those of you who remember our old Mystery Locations contest, the point system has changed. Now, if you name the location on the first day, i.e., Sunday, before midnight (ET), you will receive 7 points. Thereafter, the points will depend on the number of clues that have been provided when you name the Location as indicated below. If you name the Location after the first clue, you will receive 6 points, etc., as indicated below. However, after the Sixth (last clue) is provided on Saturday, you must name the location before midnight (EST) Saturday night.

Sunday (or before First Clue is provided) - 7 points
First Clue (Monday) - 6 points
Second Clue (Tuesday) - 5 points
Third Clue (Wednesday) - 4 points
Fourth Clue (Thursday) - 3 points
Fifth Clue (Friday) - 2 points
Sixth Clue (Saturday before midnight) - 1 point

If you wish, you may collaborate with another member and if the two of you win, points will be divided between the two of you.

This contest is meant to be fun, so, as before, we ask that you conduct yourself accordingly. To prevent any accusations of favoritism, Kitty has been advised of the name and address of the Location and will not be participating in this week’s contest.

It looks like no one is going to name this one so I’m going to name it. This is the Old Straw House at 205 Elm Street, West Newfield, York County, Maine. The house was built by Lieutenant Gideon Straw in the 1780s. In March of 1826, Hannah Straw Chadbourne died and because the ground was frozen, her family had her buried beneath the floor boards in a corner of the kitchen. In Maine, those who die in the winter are usually placed in a holding tomb in the cemetery until the spring thaw, when they are all buried – usually in late April or May. As stated in the main clue, it was a hard winter and there may not have been a holding tomb nearby, or deep snowdrifts may have made it inaccessible. The metal plaque that covered the grave was around 5-feet in length and read:

Sacred to
the memory of Hannah,
wife of Ira Chadbourne,
Who died March 2, 1826,
Age 30.

Blest are the dead, who died in Christ.
Whose triumph is so great,
Who calmly wait a nobler life,
A nobler life shall meet.

The story has been included in a few ghost books, including New England’s Ghostly Haunts by Robert Ellis Cahill. Over the years, numerous people who lived in the old Straw House reported hearing footsteps and other phenomena. One occupant claimed that he felt Hannah’s icy fingers touching him as he lay in bed. For several years, the house was used as a hunting lodge and fell into disrepair, but it has now been renovated and painted a bright, sparkling white. During the time it was in abandoned, people said that Hannah’s ghost could sometimes be seen looking out a window. The house still has stenciling in the front hall which was very popular in the Colonial period.

One year when we were on our Dark Shadows trip to Maine, Lee and Julia told us about this house. I later looked up some of the stories about it and most people say that it isn't true, that it's just a legend and that Hannah was never buried in the kitchen.

Isn't it strange that everyone who writes about the house now says that it's all a legend and yet there's a photo showing that it was definitely there. I guess it never occurred to all of those journalists and ghost hunters that just because the grave isn't there now, it was never there. Obviously, it was moved or maybe someone who owned the house didn't like it and put in a new floor and covered it up.
