Skywatchers can look forward to two full moons in March. The first – the Full Worm Moon – will occur Thursday, March 1, and the second will be Saturday, March 31. The second full moon in a calendar month is always referred to as a blue moon.
American Indians named March’s moon the Full Worm Moon because t his is when the grounds begin to soften enough for earthworm casts to reappear, signaling the return of spring. Roots and bulbs also begin to push their way upward through the soil and the Earth experiences a rebirth as it awakens from its winter slumber – the Eternal Return.
The moon reaches it’s full phase at 7:51 on the evening of March 1. To get the full effect of the Full Worm Moon, moonrise on March 1 is as follows:
Eastport, Maine: 5:58 p.m. Pensacola, Florida: 6:21 p.m. Sioux City, Iowa: 7:18 p.m. Flagstaff, Arizona: 6:17 p.m. Salem, Oregon: 5:53 p.m. Sources: Anthony Russo, SILive, February 26, 2018, and The Old Farmer’s Almanac.
