Fluffy Black Shadow: A couple of years ago I walked into the dining room in the evening to see a fluffy black shadow, about the size of a cat, on the floor by the open French doors to the lounge. It appeared to be watching my new cat stretched out asleep on the upholstered foot stool opposite the door.
My old cat wasn't allowed beyond the kitchen as she kept getting red mites from hunting birds. I didn't want the mites getting into the carpet and chairs so the cat stayed in her box next to the radiator in the kitchen. She'd passed away in her sleep six months before and later I couldn't help wondering if the black shadow was her in astral form watching her upstart replacement.
Anyway the shadow sensed me coming up behind it and shot past my right foot at speed heading towards the corner of the room. I jumped but I wasn't frightened.
I turned all the lights on and searched for a stray cat or something else that could have been what I'd seen, but there was nothing there.

I think there may be more ghost cats than dogs, unless you count the black hellhounds as dogs.

The Two-Week-Old Ghost: I have worked in nursing homes for many years and as 80% of people die within two years of coming into a nursing home from home, there are a lot of ghost stories. Here's one of mine....
I was working in an old nursing home in Suffolk, UK last year. Just before I went off on annual leave one of the residents died unexpectedly. Let's call him A. I came back two weeks later and as I came through the key coded door I saw A loitering by the side of the door, but I forgot he was dead. That spot is where many of the dementia patients like A stood around, hoping to slip out of the door unseen. When I saw A I was immediately worried that he'd fall on me. He had fallen and hit his head against my back a few weeks earlier and it really hurt. Then I remembered that he'd died.
"You can't hurt me, you're dead," I said out loud. Then he vanished. I reported the sighting to the manager and she wasn't surprised. She said it was his funeral that day and to expect a lot of his family and friends coming for his wake which was happening at our Home that afternoon.

Or do you think that his spirit appeared because the wake was being held there? A lot of people say that the spirits of the dead return to the places where they were happy and that's why places like nursing homes, hospitals and prisons usually aren't haunted.

'A' seemed happy enough, although he was always trying to escape as many people with dementia do. The manager seemed to think it was because of the wake. I never saw that ghost again. I've had a great many experiences of ghosts and astral wild life in the nursing homes I've worked in and I've been involved in two spirit clearings by the local priest when deceased residents were upsetting the staff, ringing the call bell repeatedly and holding doors shut. I think you're wrong then about nursing homes and probably hospitals. My daughter is a staff nurse in one of the big old London hospitals. She dreads night shifts because of the paranormal goings on.

No one can know with certainty what happens after death, but when the spirit leaves the body at death, perhaps in some cases it remains at the location of death for a time before moving on. This could account for paranormal activity in hospitals and nursing homes. I believe that any spirits that remain in hospitals, nursing homes, prisons and other places where people don't want to be are haunted by either employees who were happy working there, or the buildings where they are located were haunted before they became a nursing home, or whatever. I just don't can't see spirits remaining at places where they were unhappy in life.
You mentioned spirit cleanings at nursing homes where you've worked. Were they perhaps in old buildings that served some other purpose before they became nursing homes?

Astral Wild Life On two occasions I've seen things that look like transparent balls of glue, about the size of a football, that move along by throwing out gelatinous triangular spikes from near the top of the ball so that it rolls over. A bit like a very large horse chestnut only see through. The first time that I saw them I was at a class on chakras which was being held in a medieval barn. It started as a transparent circle that descended from the ceiling, like a huge spider letting itself down on a thread. I blinked several times as I though it was something floating on my eye, but it wasn't. Then it crossed in front of the speaker by throwing out these extensions that made it roll. I would have expected it to have floated but it didn't. Perhaps it was subject to gravity or perhaps it thought it was. As I watched it pass in front of the speaker he was talking to the person sitting next to me. I was aware that he was watching me watching the thing, which I'm sure he could see too but we both kept silent. I don't know if these things are dangerous. The second time I saw one was in one of the nursing homes I've worked in, just rolling across the floor before disappearing. I've no idea what they are and would be very interested if anyone else has experience of them.

More Astral Wild Life - Black Orbs In the past I was pestered by black orbs. This happened at a time when I was living with someone who was very negative with strong feelings of anxiety and anger. Of course that had its effect on me. I think black orbs are parasites feeding off negative energy. I would see them flying purposefully through the house, some as big as bumble bees. They could fly straight through glass windows and into walls. They also flew in and out of me, which was very disturbing. If I closed my eyes I could still see them only they turned white. I saw two coming down from an old picture in a museum once and two buzzed me in a contemporary art gallery. I also saw one fly into the wall in the bathroom of an Esso station. There's next to nothing on the web about black orbs but I had an interesting experience at a lecture by an optician in our nursing home. He said that some of his elderly patients had things floating on the outside of their eyes and even inside the water of the eye ball, but they also saw flies flying into walls which he couldn't explain. I jumped and he noticed and tried to pump me on what I knew but I didn't open up. My colleagues would have thought I was crazy. I don't live with that person anymore and my life has settled down to almost peace and quiet. I also have astral protection surrounding my home. As a result I don't see them any more.

What you're describing sounds something like the transparent ball photographed by Dr. Hippolyte Baraduc above a dying person which he believed was the soul leaving the body.

Hi Joanna. I saw something similar but different on another occasion. I was pushing a lady in a wheelchair swiftly around a corner and saw a transparent ball about the size of a football near the side of the corridor. As we approached the ball moved out of the way towards the wall, but by floating, not sending out gelatinous legs. It seemed to me that it must have been aware of its environment and sensed me coming. I didn't want to frighten the lady in the wheelchair so I didn't make a fuss but I had a good look at it when I came up to it. It had an internal large cell like structure. We had a resident in the process of dying at the time but she wasn't dead then, but I still wondered if it had anything to do with her.

Shadow People
I've heard several accounts of ghosts appearing in two dimension form as shadows. I was sceptical until I saw one myself. It was at a parish council meeting in the old church hall. I saw a shadow person dart, at great speed, around two walls of the room.
I stayed in a haunted house for two years and among many different encounters, I saw what looked like a light reflection moving across the wall. This happened in two different places in the house where there couldn't be a reflection. It was shaped like a car door. I put that down to more astral wild life.
Now I do have the ability to see subliminal messages that are flashed up on screens. It's like I see and memorise the image then read or otherwise analyse the information at leisure. In this way I think I saw the shadow person and also a more classic ghost. I was crossing the lawn and saw a small pillar of mist, up to about waist height, moving along the path outside my kitchen. It was only a second or two later that I realised it must be a ghost.

Still More Astral Wildlife: White Orbs
I had a memorable sighting of two white orbs, one following the other, about a foot off the ground, coming through a doorway of the haunted house where I used to live. More recently I was standing in my daughter's bedroom, near the open door talking to her. A pale yellow orb, a good two inches in diameter, floated purposefully past me and through the door. It was diaphanous with a solid centre from which projected wavy lines, much like a dandelion seed but the centre was much bigger. Once it reached the landing it disappeared, which of course dandelion seeds don't.

People today seldom mention Baraduc's photographs, but there was something that appeared to be leaving the bodies. Most were misty forms, but one of them did look like a transparent sphere. I'm surprised that some of today's ghost hunters haven't tried to photograph spirits leaving the body, but if anyone has, I haven't heard about it.
