I just realized that it was this time of the year in 1909 that the Jersey Devil came calling. I checked the news, but didn't see where there have been any sightings this year. If anyone sees anything about the Jersey Devil in the news, please share it with the rest of us.

I have some family in New Jersey and this summer, some of the teens went to the Blue Hole. One of them tied a long rope around his waist and swam out into the hole. He said that nothing tried to pull him under, but that the water was so cold that you couldn't stay in it for long. They also said that all the time they were there, that they felt like they were being watched, but that could have been their imagination.

I've never been to Jersey, but I'd like to visit the Pine Barrens and maybe camp out or go hiking.

I always looked at Jersey Devil as an omen of England. Sightings for 200 years since the revolution and petered out by 1903. It makes sense.

The Revolution started in 1776 and 1903 was 123 years later. Then the sightings started again in 1909 and there have been regular sightings since.

It’s not like Britain disappeared. It’s just not as major a player like before. I think it’s generally considered to have declined after the Victorian era which ended in 1901.
Napoleons brother saw it. So it’s one of the interpretations I’m pretty sure of.
I also think they are omen of specific events of significance like Waterloo rather than an era or epoch like an American century or something. Britain is represented by mythical creatures also unlike the United States.
Looking at dates could be interesting but then it could be 20 years give or take or even something that never ended up happening.

It was in the month of January 110 years ago that most of the Jersey Devil sightings happened. I wonder if the creature comes out of the woods more often in the winter because of the scarcity of food?

Monsters Across America: Educator/Author Recalls Jersey Devil EncounterThunder rumbled through New Jersey’s Pine Barrens the day Michael Orfe, a local educator and author, recalled his personal encounter with the infamous Jersey Devil on Fox Nation’s Monsters Across America.
“I get chills every time I see it,” Orfe told hostess Kacie McDowell as he displayed a sketch of the Jersey Devil. “This is by one of my students,” he explained. “It’s a great drawing. He was a very talented artist. I hid it [the sketch] away from my children at home when they were little.”
His encounter – or ordeal – occurred 60 years ago when he was a high school student. He and his date, a girl named Violet, drove along an unpaved South Jersey road and parked in an area that was, at the time, something of a lover’s lane. “I felt cocky and comfortable about being in the Pine Barrens, but I shouldn’t have,” he admitted. “We heard a rustling and there was definitely something out in the woods, in the pines. Suddenly, Violet opened her eyes and mouth wide and she started pointing to the window because there was a hand coming through the window. And that hand was big, it had sharp – almost like a claw – sharp nails coming right at Violet’s head.”
Orfe immediately started rolling up the window. “I caught the arm in the window and blood spurted out, unfortunately, on her face, on her, and on me,” he declared. “I tried to start the car. She’s screaming, she’s totally frightened. ... I got the car started and I tried to put it in what I thought was reverse, but it was actually going forward, at the same moment that he [the Devil] had leaped on the front of my father’s car, picked up his right arm, and shattered the windshield, just spider-webbed the whole windshield.”
When he finally got the vehicle in reverse, the creature “tumbled off the car, just fell over backwards on little scrub pines like you see all around here,” Orfe recalled. “Horrible sound. I hightailed it out of the woods.”Sources: Yael Halon, Fox News, January 20, 2021; and Monsters Across America.

Jersey Devil Sighting in Summer of 2017Yesterday (April 8), Lon Strickler of Phantoms & Monsters reported a Jersey Devil sighting he received from a man who identified himself as a South Jersey police officer. According to the report, the encounter occurred in the summer of 2017 around 2 a.m. when the man and his girlfriend, driving around aimlessly near the Pine Barrens, saw a “creature standing at about 4-5 feet in height ... covered in brown hair, almost like a goat’s.” He did not see the face or head of whatever it was, but described it as having “black wings that appeared to be leathery and smooth” and when they were at a distance of approximately 10 to 20 yards, it “flapped its wings a few times and took off vertically.”
Although he pulled over and he and his companion got out of the car and looked around with a flashlight, they saw nothing. “I don’t know what we saw that evening,” he added. “I will make no assumptions. I just saw a creature I could not identify in the short time that it was observed. ... I’m a lawman in South Jersey and have seen some strange and crazy things in my time on the streets. But this is definitely the creepiest.”Source: Phantoms & Monsters, April 8, 2022.
