Model Kara Nichols Has Been Missing for One Year, Family Offers Reward for Information
COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. – One year ago today, 19-year-old Colorado Springs model Kara Nichols disappeared on her way to Denver for a modeling photo shoot. She hasn’t been seen or heard from since. Investigators told 7News tips continue to come in regarding Nichols, some as recently as last week, but many have not proven fruitful.
But despite the lull in new information in the case, the young woman’s family continues the search hoping she will be found alive. “It has been one year since our beloved daughter, Kara Nichols, went missing from her residence in Colorado Springs, and our family is bracing for another holiday season without her,” Paul and Julia Nichols, parents of Kara, wrote on the “Help Us Find Kara Nichols” Facebook page Wednesday. “We will never give up hope of finding Kara. Someone, somewhere, knows what happened and we are begging that person to leave a tip with the El Paso County Sheriff’s Department.” Her parents are offering a $1,000 reward for information leading to answers in the disappearance of their daughter, who would now be 20-years-old.
According to the El Paso County Sheriff's Office, then 19-year-old Kara Nichols was last seen on Oct. 9, 2012 in Colorado Springs after leaving for work in Denver for a modeling job with two unidentified women. It is unclear if she arrived and her current whereabouts are a mystery. One of the women traveling with Nichols was interviewed by police, but her name has not been released. Authorities are still looking for the second woman.
Attempts by authorities to reach Nichols via her cellphone – the last call from the phone was at 11:45 p.m. the day she went missing – or to determine the phone’s location have been unsuccessful, Sgt. Joe Roybal said.
According to her Facebook page and Model Mayhem profile (NSFW), Nichols began modeling in February 2012. “Although I’m new to it, modeling is something I am very passionate about and I take my work seriously,” her profile reads. “Currently I’m working on building my portfolio so I’m always looking for modeling opportunities in my area. I’ve done mostly lingerie shoots so far but I’m extremely open minded.”
Roybal said authorities do not yet know if her work as a model played a role in her disappearance. “We really don’t have any indication as to why she hasn’t been in contact,” he admitted. “We have nothing to indicate any crime has been committed or foul play. The only thing that concerns us is that she has not been in contact with anybody.”
Kara Nichols is a white female, 5'8" tall, 120 pounds, with blonde hair and green eyes. Anyone with information should call Detective Cliff Porter at (719) 520-7227. Sources: 7News, October 9, 2013, and Las Vegas World News.

I wonder if she got involved with a bad crowd, like human traffickers. They often claim to be looking for models but once their victims arrive, they drug them and get them involved in these trafficking rings, like in the movie "Taken", or they may have sold her off to a pimp. Considering she said she was very open minded, it is also possible she was killed in a sex game gone wrong, who knows.

I wonder how she ever got into modeling! She's not what I'd call attractive. I doubt she was drugged and sold into white slavery. More likely some guy promised her he could get her into real modeling, or the movies, and she didn't have any better sense than to believe him and he killed her. Most wannabe models and actresses are so dumb they would make a post look intelligent and that makes them easy targets for perves on the prowl.

If foul play was involved I hope they catch him, ASAP!

I didn't think she was pretty either, but I see men going for unattractive women all the time. Wouldn't surprise me if she ran into a predator though, they look for naive, young girls who are desperate for fame.

I'm not saying that some men wouldn't go for her, what I'm saying is that she's damn ugly to be a model. I doubt we'll ever know what happened. It's been a year and if there aren't any suspects, chances are that whoever grabbed her won't ever be caught. The real world is different from books, movies and TV shows like "Law and Order," 35 to 40 percent of homicides in the United States are never solved.

Were any arrests ever made in this case? I was re-reading some old posts and noticed that in this one, she says that she's "extremely open minded," which means that she's willing to do nude modeling, and that would attract perverts.

In 2022, her body was found on property belonging to Joel Hollendorfer’s parents, and police discovered phone calls between Hollendorfer and Kara Nichols, who was turning tricks at the time of her disappearance. He allegedly confessed to a family member that he had accidentally strangled the girl while they were having sex in his truck. He was tried last year, but instead of first-degree murder, the jury convicted him of manslaughter, and he was sentenced to 24 years in prison.

If you listen to what families say about missing relatives, they're all a bunch of angels. Also, how many modeling jobs would be available in Colorado Springs? Still, I'm glad they caught and convicted the SOB who killed her.
