Liberals Want to Cancel Thanksgiving
Earlier this week, an article entitled “Should America Keep Celebrating Thankgsiving?” appeared in The Nation, a liberal biweekly magazine. “Let’s drop the lie of Thanksgiving and begin a Truthsgiving,” author Sean Sherman proposes. We should “decolonize Thanksgiving,” he says, branding the holiday a symbol of “colonization” and “racism.”
“For many Americans, the image of Thanksgiving is one of supposed unity: the gathering of ‘Pilgrims and Indians’ in a harmonious feast,” he continues. “But this version obscures the harsh truth, one steeped in colonialism, violence, and misrepresentation. By exploring the Indigenous perspective on Thanksgiving, we can not only discern some of the nuances of decolonization but gain a deeper understanding of American history.”
Sherman, who claims to be a member of the Oglala Lakota Nation, adds that the celebration causes “tremendous distress to those of us who are still reeling from the trauma” of the Pilgrims landing in America, by promoting the “nutritional and culinary diversity” of “Native American” foods and “centering the Indigenous perspective and challenging the colonial narratives around the holiday.”
Other liberal publications are also bashing the Thanksgiving holiday. For example, on October 30, Delish.com posted an article by Kristin Salaky entitled “The Dark Truth Behind the Origins of Thanksgiving,” wherein she alleges the holiday is “not what you learned in school,” and suggests celebrants instead “Seek out Native American authors, activists, artists and chefs, and support their work. Listen to and uplift their perspectives and make sure your support goes beyond Thanksgiving and holidays like Indigenous Peoples Day.”
But Americans are loathe to give up their turkey, dressing, pumpkin pies and other Thanksgiving fare, and many took to social media to express their displeasure. “It’s starting to sound like ‘decolonization’ just means ruining any and every tradition and fun time, to be replaced by the narcissistic, jargon-filled rantings of 20-somethings whose infallible knowledge of the world is informed by TikTok,” podcaster Meghan Murphy posted on X.
“The recent calls to ‘decolonize Thanksgiving’ fail to recognize the holiday’s profound significance in American culture,” one Fox reader commented. “Thanksgiving is a cherished tradition, symbolizing gratitude, family unity, and our nation’s resilience. As a conservative, I firmly believe in upholding this tradition, which transcends historical controversies to celebrate our blessings and national spirit. Inviting people over for Thanksgiving is a practice that honors these values, fostering community and togetherness. It’s a day that reflects our patriotic spirit and the shared gratitude we have for our freedoms and prosperity. Altering or diminishing the essence of Thanksgiving would be to overlook its role in strengthening our national identity and unity.”
Another accused liberals of inventing their own version of events, always deifying those they mistakenly consider “oppressed”: “Libs always seen to forget the savage nature of ‘Native Americans’ that killed other tribes, and in some cases wiped them off the planet. They’d still be living in tepees if not for colonization,” he/she wrote.
A third, less-loquacious reader was more succinct, writing: “Do these Libtards have nothing to do but sit around and think about how they can ruin things for others?”
