Christians Disturbed by 'Woke' Changes to 'God Rest Ye Merry Gentlemen'
The first known printing of the iconic Christmas carol “God Rest Ye Merry Gentlemen” was around 1760, but an early version has been traced to the mid-1600s. Now, the perpetually disturbed and ever-whiny “woke” crowd has decided it isn’t “inclusive” and a California pastor added the following verses, which the Rev. Matthew Firth said fit the “C of E’s woke, unbiblical agenda”:
God rest you also, women, who by men have been erased,
Through history ignored and scorned, defiled and displaced;
Remember that your stories too, are held within God’s grace.
God rest you, queer and questioning, your anxious hearts be still,
Believe that you are deeply known and part of God’s good will
For all to live as one in peace; the global dream fulfilled.
The woke version was recently sung by a Church of England choir, and Cardinal Vincent Nichols, Catholic Archbishop of Westminster, and Christians in general, were outraged. “I think what Christmas does, and many other moments, it tells us the importance of ritual,” Nichols said. “Ritual helps us to step outside of our own little bubble and connect with something we have received, inherited and that we hope to pass on. Those values are the continuation of musical repertoire, of the ability to sing together, of looking at the rituals that have been fashioned over centuries. Those are probably for me more important than particular sensitivities which come and go.”
Religious leaders and Christians throughout the U.S. and Britain are equally disturbed over the changes, with some citing the fact that Christianity is being singled out by the Left. “You don’t see the liberal progressive, all-inclusive crowd targeting Islamic practices, which are much more oppressive when it comes to women and queers than Christianity ever was or ever will be,” one individual commented.
“I wonder what would happen to a Muslim mosque and its congregants if Islamic founder Muhammad was blasphemed like this? I mean, radical Islamists kill people for simply drawing pictures of this guy,” Mike Miller added.
