Today's Thought for the Day:
At first cock-crow The ghosts must go Back to their quiet graves below. – Theodosia Garrison, “The Neighbors.”
Everyone knows ghosts are associated with Halloween and people on sites like this know that the Celts believed the veil between life and death was very thin at Halloween. But if the veil gradually opens as Halloween approaches and then gradually closes, why do most people seem to think that once Halloween is over, the ghosts all return to their graves? If the veil gradually closes, ghosts would be just as able to return to Earth in November as they are in October.

It means that the 3 months of the year when you're more likely to see ghosts are September, October and November.

Ancient people probably decided there were more ghosts around what is now Halloween because they had more time to talk about ghosts and other things at that time. The harvest was over, the nights had grown much longer and because they weren’t having to work as hard gathering food, they had more time to sit around the fire and tell stories. Although the men hunted large animals, such as deer, in the fall and winter, they didn’t hunt every day, and many days, the inhabitants of a village wouldn’t have had to do anything beyond the usual chores like cooking, gathering wood for the fires and feeding and watering the livestock.
