Both of these new shows were on PBS tonight. Magpie Murders might have been interesting, but even though the story was set in 1955, they had a young white man from a well-to-do family engaged to marry a black woman, something that would never have happened at that time. If the producers weren't going to be realistic, then they should have set it in a different time period.
The second one, Annika, was about an uptight female chief inspector, who wore no makeup, making her even more ugly, and a crappy teenage daughter with an attitude. But she wasn't the only obnoxious teenager on the show. Another ran from the police and a third actually threatened a police officer with a harpoon, but instead of arresting the bitch, Annika talked her into not killing anyone. Even in the ultra liberal UK, I can't believe teenagers with weapons can threaten police officers and get by with it.

I later looked it up on IMDb and even the vicar of the white Anglican church is black, which is something else that would never have happened in 1955.
I see that I'm not the only one who has noticed how ugly a lot of British actresses are on screen. Many of them don't seem to wear any makeup at all and some of them would look presentable if they'd use a little lipstick and eye makeup. I noticed the same thing on Broadchurch: most of the women look like a bunch of field hands, like they don't give a damn what they look like.

A lot of British actresses -- and actors -- have weak chins and many of the women don't seem to do anything at all to improve their appearance. Some of the women on Midsomer Murders are ugly as homemade sin and while no amount of makeup would make them pretty, they could at least comb their hair and apply a little lipstick.
