I've been watching the original Salem's Lot on DVD (the remake sucks). Does anyone know if a specific Maine town or house inspired Stephen King to write Salem's Lot? I've heard there are some weird little towns in Maine.

I've heard there are some weird little towns in Maine. From the description in the book, many believe ‘Salem’s Lot is based on the town of Falmouth, which is just north of Portland. Others believe it is farther north. The cult that King refers to in his history of ‘Salem’s Lot is a Christian evangelical movement started by Frank Sanford, who built Shiloh Temple in Durham, Maine, which adheres somewhat to King’s description of the Marsten House. King grew up in Durham.

I didn't like the vampires in 'Salem's Lot. They weren't traditional vampires who slept in coffins during the day, they were more like killer zombies than vampires.

I first saw Salem's Lot on TV when I was around 10 years old and that kid floating outside the window scared the beejesus out of me.

'Salems Lot would have been a lot more interesting with traditional vampires. If Barlow had been someone like Barnabas Collins, who looked and acted somewhat normal, there would have been more of a mystery to what was happening. Instead, people were literally turning into vampires overnight, which was just too incredulous.

I was around 11 or 12 when my brother, sister and I saw it on TV and it scared all of us. My brother and I shared a room and I think we slept with the light on for a month.

I don't think the remake is all that bad, but it would have been better without the cellphones and the black teacher, which would be unusual in a small Maine town.

There's another remake of 'Salem's Lot that's supposed to come out in the fall, I think. It isn't a made for TV movie like the other two, it's going to be shown in theaters. Mark Petrie is black, which he wasn't in the book, but today diversity is more important than accuracy.

Mark Petrie is black, which he wasn't in the book, but today diversity is more important than accuracy. I was born in Maine, have lived here continuously, and never even saw a black person until I was around 12-years-old and went on a field trip to Boston. The black population of Maine is something like 1.38% and outside of Portland and Lewiston, where black African refugees have settled, one never sees a black person. The town where I live has zero blacks and I know people who have never even seen a black person in their entire lives except on TV or in the movies. Having a black actor portray Mark Petrie in a movie about a small town in rural Maine is ludicrous.
