Kids Think Spider-bite Will Give Them Spider-Man PowersThree boys, ages 12, 10 and 8, fascinated by Spider-Man, the comic book super hero, provoked a poisonous black widow spider into biting them.
On May 14, the three brothers came upon the spider while tending goats near Chayanta, a small town in the Andean region of Bolivia. Believing the spider’s bite would give them powers akin to those of the fictional character, they poked it with a stick, annoying the normally timid arachnid into biting them.
Within minutes, they experienced localized pain that quickly led to profuse sweating, fever, tremors and muscle aches. Their mother rushed them to a nearby clinic, however, their conditions did not improve and they were transferred to a hospital in Llallagua, where they were administered antivenom. The three gradually improved during their six-day hospitalization until they were deemed well enough to release to their mother’s care on May 20. I can understand an 8-year-old being that dumb, but a 12-year-old?
