East Brunswick Ghost Walks Every Saturday in October
EAST BRUNSWICK, N.J. – October 2016 marks the Second Annual East Brunswick Ghost Walk in the historic Old Bridge Village section of town. This neighborhood was settled in the 1600s, but first inhabited by the Leni Lenape tribe. Their trails became roads and their village became the site of the South River Bridge Tavern. In 1727, a local Indian Sachem shot and killed the owner of the tavern, marking the first, but not the last, murder to occur here.
This year’s tour includes a litany of hauntings, spirit activity and tales of deceit, decadence and death. During the early 20th Century, a series of murders and arson struck the village, followed by bootlegging and the rise of the Ku Klux Klan during the Roaring 20s. One of the sites on the tour is the Wright House (above) on Kossman Street, where, one Good Friday, Rachel Wright, an elderly, blind and frail old woman, was brutally murdered by a local teenager who thought there was money hidden in the house.
The tour lasts about ninety minutes and features stories of many of the historic homes and sites where spirits still reside. Local heroes such as William Rogers, Joe Crandall and the Kossman brothers – all military men killed in action – will also be highlighted. A portion of the proceeds will be donated to the Crandall-Kossman Post of the American Legion, located in the historic village.
The tours, sponsored by the New Jersey Ghost Organization, begin on Kossman Street, near the corner of Main Street. For GPS directions, use 21 Kossman Street as the central point of the historic village. The tours take place each Saturday (Oct. 1, 8, 15, 22 and 29), beginning at 7:30 p.m., weather permitting. The tour is appropriate for ages 8 and above and are both wheelchair- and stroller-friendly. Flashlights and cameras are recommended. Cost: $8.00.
