'Ghost Adventures' to Feature Los Coches Adobe (California)

Ghost Adventures to Film at Los Coches Adobe
SOLEDAD, Calif. – Some of the country’s most popular paranormal investigators are in Monterey County gearing up for an overnight stay next week in Soledad’s Los Coches Adobe. The crew from Travel Channel’s Ghost Adventures is no stranger to the region, having previously visited Brookdale Lodge in Brookdale, Tor House in Carmel and Point Sur Lighthouse. This time, they will stay at the former railroad terminal near Highway 101 from Tuesday through Thursday, according to Soledad officials. “There’s an amazing amount of local people with a fear of that place,” Donald Wilcox, public works director, said. Ghost Adventures is Travel Channel’s most watched show, according to Ratings Intelligence, and its 11th season starts in August.
Los Coches Adobe is well-known as an allegedly haunted spot among Soledad locals, but not widely known beyond that. The website HauntedPlaces claims a “ghostly lady in black” has been seen walking the grounds and the screams of trapped miners come from an old well. Mayor Fred Ledesma said he has heard dozens of stories about “spooks or being spooked out” at the adobe, including from his father. “I’ve been there a few times and it scares the heck out of me. I’m not good for spooks,” he said.
The adobe was built as a rancho in 1843 and went on to become a Wells Fargo agent office, then a post office, a stagecoach stop and an inn, according to the city. It was heavily used from 1854 until 1868 by people traveling between San Francisco and Los Angeles. In 1872, it became a railroad stop, continuing its importance as a link between northern and southern California. It became a highway rest stop for much of the 20th century and in the 1980s, was turned over to the city, which is seeking funding to restore the adobe.
Wilcox said the show’s approximately 16-person crew will conduct interviews around town, film re-enactments of alleged paranormal activity at the site and spend Wednesday night locked inside the adobe. The city did not charge them to film, hoping the show will be good publicity for the town.
Show host Zak Bagans has been showing up all over the county for more than a week. Mark Bourez of Pacific Grove said he ran into Bagans at the Monterey Sports Center and chased him down in the parking lot on behalf of his son, Garrett, a big fan of the show. Bourez said Bagans was willing to go back into the center to spend time talking with his 13-year-old son, who is high-functioning autistic and recently won three gold medals at the Special Olympics at UC Davis. “Mr. Bagans was very kind to go out of his way, take the time to meet with, and sign an autograph for, Garrett,” Bourez said. “Ghost Adventures is Garrett’s favorite television show. It meant a lot to him to meet the star of the show.”
Bagans’ social media traffic showed him just about everywhere on the Monterey Peninsula. He has posted pictures from Cannery Row, Asilomar State Beach, Mission Ranch Hotel, Pacific Grove’s Recreation Trail, Crown & Anchor bar in downtown Monterey, downtown Carmel, Carmel Mission and at the Lone Cypress. Never one to shy away from the unexplained, he visited San Carlos Cathedral in Monterey, also rumored to be haunted, and the newly discovered site on Lighthouse Avenue where a 4,080-year-old male skeleton was found.
