Night in a Haunted Jail
One brave soul is spending the night at an old haunted jail (above) in Ashburn, Georgia. Sometimes you can hear the unexplained slamming of doors at the historical Crime and Punishment Museum. “I wouldn’t be spending the night in here,” Stevi Thompson said. According to the stories told by tour guides, the strange occurrences are the antics of former inmate Miles Gibbs. “There’s been incidents of, um, of Coke bottles or something like that being left in here,” Thompson added.
The strange incidents inside the former jail are attracting ghost hunters from across the southeast to Ashburn, and Greg Milette is preparing to be locked inside for an entire night. “The worst I am expecting is to get spooked out and I expect that might happen,” Milette said. In fact the spooking may have already begun as we both heard the slamming of a phantom door during our interview.
Milette is aware of the stories of the haunted jail. “I’ve heard about beds and a couple of the cells shaking on their own.” He’s even visited the jail about four times, but he ain’t afraid of no ghost. “I’m rather skeptical of ghosts,” he admitted. “Maybe my opinion will be changed by the morning.”
Milette plans to spend most of the night in the old jail reading the book Crime and Punishment to raise money for a cause close to his heart. “I’m reading it in an effort to gain attention for Greentree Learning Center which is a non-profit I operate,” he explained.
Milette said once the night is over, he will be out the door.
