A third of Britons believe their house is haunted
If you’re British and you’ve heard things going bump in the night and wondered what it is, then you’re not alone. A third of Britons believe their house is haunted and some spooked homeowners are certain they have seen a ghost walking their corridors.
A quarter of those who feel their home has a supernatural presence were convinced a poltergeist had moved around their possessions. And a sixth of those who thought their house was haunted said doors open or closed by themselves while a further sixth said they had even seen a ghost.
The figures come from a survey conducted by Confused. The head of home insurance Gareth Lane said: “Ghosts, ghouls and things that go bump in the night are usually seen in films and TV programs. But for some homeowners, they are a very real concern with three in 10 Britons saying they thought their home was haunted. While the most common cause for people thinking their home was haunted was strange noises, more than a quarter say their belongings would disappear without explanation. While your nightmare neighbors are more likely to be the ones causing you problems, protecting yourself from unexplained disappearances and damage is vital.”
The survey also found more than a quarter of Britons would be put off buying a house if they believed it was haunted. Two fifths would not contemplate living in a home if they knew something bad had happened there, such as a murder.
Of those who believed their home was haunted, nearly a quarter tried to research the history of their house and area. A tenth tried to contact the spirits to get an answer while a sixth had been forced to sell up and flee.
