Haunted Maine Lighthouse Sells for $78,000
YORK, Maine –New England’s tallest lighthouse has been sold for $78,000. A federal government spokeswoman says the General Services Administration has accepted a bid for the Boon Island Light Station off York, Maine. The winning bidder is Portland, Maine, resident Art Girard. The Administration closed out an auction of the 133-foot-tall lighthouse tower August 17 in which more than a dozen people submitted bids. The government had to approve Girard’s bid, which was the highest of the lot.
The lighthouse was built in 1855 and is located on a tiny rocky island six miles off the Maine coast. It is still active as a navigational aid. Boon Island is one of 57 active lighthouses in Maine and the tallest in New England, though not the highest above sea level.
Boon Island Light is said to be haunted by the spirit of a former keeper’s wife by the name of Katherine Bright.

Isn't that the lighthouse that Lee wrote about in one of her stories about haunted lighthouses? I tried to find it in the old group, but it's hard to do searches now and I couldn't find it. I remember that it was very cold and woman's husband drowned and she drug his corpse inside of the tower. It was a very spooky story. I'd like to read it again.

I didn't even think they could sell such structures to individuals. How do they know the individual will keep it operational?

A lot of lighthouses have been sold. People who buy them are restricted as to what they can and cannot do with the property and in the case of Boon Island, which is an active lighthouse, the Coast Guard will still maintain the light.

Good to know. Are they allowed to live on premises? I guess as long as they don't interfere with the light or the structure's appearance, they probably can do so?

Last summer when our ladies went on their Dark Shadows vacation, they said that they visited some people who lived at a lighthouse, so if there's a keeper's house, they must be allowed to live on the premises.

People are allowed to live in lighthouses. I posted a story a while back (link below) about people who were renovating a haunted lighthouse they had bought in Fall River, Mass., to rent. There are a lot of lighthouses that are now privately owned where the owners live in them or either rent them out by the night or week.
But Boon Island is a different situation. The lighthouse is situated on a small pile of rocks six miles off the coast of Maine and it isn't that easy to get there or to return. There have been keeper's houses on the rock pile, but they were all damaged by fierce storms. After the keeper's house was destroyed again in a storm in 1978, the lighthouse was automated. Also, there is no fresh water on the island, so rain water has to be caught in cisterns for drinking and bathing.
