Mysterious Boom Rattles South Carolina's Low CountrySouth Carolina authorities are investigating a mysterious boom that awakened residents and shook homes and buildings in multiple Low Country areas. “Getting several questions about a large boom/rumble in the Charleston area earlier this morning,” a spokesperson with the Emergency Management Division tweeted. “We have no reports of any earthquakes at this time. We’re working to determine the source.”
Last year, the state was plagued by a series of earthquakes, but the U.S. Geological Survey confirmed there had been no earthquake activity detected, and NASA officials indicated no spacecraft were reentering the atmosphere at the time of the boom.
Some suspected the boom was the result of a U.S. Coast Guard training exercise, however, a Coast Guard spokesman insisted there was no link between the exercise and the earth-shaking boom.
Experts say meteors entering the earth’s atmosphere can cause a booming sound, but there were no reports of fireballs and no meteors had been detected on radar.Sources: Ben Hooper, UPI, May 25, 2023, and Andrew Wulfeck, Fox Weather, May 25, 2023.
