I was watching some Halloween-themed movies and TV shows and one is "The Magician's Nephew," a Midsomer Murders show from several years ago. Does anyone know if it's true one of the characters, Ernest Balliol played by Ronald Pickup, is based on Gerald Gardner? He even looks something like Gardner. However, I'm confused by the character Aloysius Wilmington, who claims he invented a magical system called the Temple of Thoth, which he had said was passed to him by an Egyptian God, after drinking two bottles of Scotch. I've heard that Wilmington is based on Aleister Crowley, but in the show, Wilmington has become a devout Christian and that's something Crowley did not do.

Even if the Wilmington character was loosely based on Crowley, the resemblance would have been slight. His comment that he wrote the Thoth instructions after two bottles of Scotch reminded me of The Amityville Horror, which was concocted by Jay Anson, the Lutzes and DeFeo's attorney while drinking numerous bottles of wine.
