I think I've got this one. I believe it's the Moana Surfrider Hotel on Waikiki Beach, now part of the Westin Resort & Spa, at 2365 Kaanapali Parkway, Lahaina, Hawaii. On February 28, 1905, Jane Lathrop Stanford, who with her husband, founded Stanford University, died of strychnine poisoning in Room 120 of the hotel. She had gone to Hawaii to recover from what was probably bronchitis, which was aggravated by San Francisco's unhealthy winter fog. Around 6 weeks before her death, she detected a bitter taste in her Poland Spring water, mineral water bottled in Poland Spring, Maine, which was also the bottled water favored by Howard Hughes. People believe she is the "woman in white" who walks the hall in search of her room, which she cannot find because the interior of the hotel has been altered and Room 120 is now part of the lobby.

Lost Horizon, a 1933 novel by James Hilton, is best remembered as the origin of Shangri-La, which was the name Doris Duke gave her estate in Hawaii.
