You can find the Biltmore Greensboro Hotel at 111 West Washington Street in Greensboro, NC.

Greensboro is named for Revolutionary War General Nathanael Greene. And Washington Street is named for....well....President Washington. North Carolina was originally part of the Carolina Province, which included South Carolina, and was named in honor of King Charles I.

Greensboro is located in Guilford County which was described by Sallie Stockard in her book "The History of Guilford County, North Carolina" as having been "....an unbroken forest with thick undergrowth of huckleberry bushes, that bore a finely flavored fruit."

In 1865 Confederate General Joseph E. Johnston established his final headquarters in Greensboro. It was to Greensboro that the Confederate Government fled after being driven out of Richmond. And Greensboro was the last place that the Confederate Government was able to meet before completely disbanding.

In 1781 the British defeated the Americans in the Battle of Guilford Courthouse. But the British suffered so many casualties in the battle that they withdrew from the field and largely abandoned their attempts to destroy the rebel forces in the Carolinas. This makes it a decisive battle of the Revolutionary War.

The Biltmore Hotel is said to be haunted by two ghosts. Philip and Lydia. Some say that Philip was a young accountant living at the Hotel when his body was found in an alley by the side of the hotel. Some sources say he was strangled, other sources say his throat had been cut. Either way, he was dead.

Lydia is supposed to have been a prostitute who was pushed down a set of stairs. No one was ever charged or convicted, but she is every bit as dead as Philip.
