I lived in Athens when this happened. It's a small college town and the first murders (professors) was shocking. It's somewhat nice neighborhood. The house is catty-corner to a big public park with soccer fields and a pool and playgrounds etc. Certainly Bankston watched the house from that park. It's creepy. It's a striking house. (For many years it was closed up and folks dubbed it "The Murder House") And then in what seemed like only weeks there were more murders! Bloody hacking murders with knives and hatchets! It was like the Manson Family had moved to town. Shocking is understatement. They caught 16 year old Bankston quickly. If I remember correctly he was driving the victim's car and parked at his mom's house. Clearly he was bonkers. I heard his nickname was "JuneBug"

I had some friends and relatives in Athens and they were scared to death because things like that don't happen in Athens. They started locking their bedroom doors at night and keeping their guns beside the bed.
