The evil eye is a curse believed to be cast by a malevolent glare, usually given to a person when they are unaware. Many cultures believe that receiving the evil eye will cause misfortune or injury. Talismans created to protect against the evil eye are also frequently called "evil eyes". History[edit] Belief in the evil eye dates back to Classical antiquity. It is referenced by Hesiod, Callimachus, Plato, Diodorus Siculus, Theocritus, Plutarch, Heliodorus, Pliny the Elder, and Aulus Gellius. Peter Walcot's Envy and the Greeks (1978) listed more than one hundred works by these and other authors mentioning the evil eye.
The Greek Fathers accepted the traditional belief in the evil eye, but attributed it to the Devil and envy. In Greek theology, the evil eye or vaskania (βασκανία) is considered harmful for the one whose envy inflicts it on others as well as for the sufferer. The Greek Church has an ancient prayer against vaskania from the Megan Hieron Synekdemon (Μέγαν Ιερόν Συνέκδημον) book of prayers.

Why was this discussion moved? If it's about serial killers, shouldn't it be under Murder and Mayhem?
I still don't understand the Evil Eye and serial killers. Buffalo Bill is a fictional character. Did the killer who used women's skin in real life have an evil eye?

No one was afraid of Ed Gein. Even after a kid told people that he had all kinds of strange things in his house, like shrunken heads, no one believed it. Gein himself told people that Mary Hogan, the woman who went missing, was at his farm and everyone thought he was joking.

Where in the literature does it say it causes “fear”?
Jason already cleared up that I’m talking about the lead-up in non-specific cases.

People used to believe that the look of a witch with an evil eye could cause all kinds of problems, from disease, to cows drying up. Are you saying that Gein had an evil eye, or that his mother's evil eye turned him into a weirdo who wanted a skin suit?

People feared it when they were worried about fertility and crops and animals.
I mentioned Buffalo Bill rather than talk about my own personal experience because he Coveted (coveted the essence in the book, no question) so I thought it would bring interest not confusion. Someone else brought in Gein. I posted for their perusal to see what they had to say as they seem to know more about him than me.
Xtreme Psychology is more than just serial killers. If anything, I think the Evil Eye being passive, it would apply to someone who is passive and bottles it up like mass murderers....
If you don't think this factors into the rejection factor, okay then you don't. It's back to the drawing board.

But Buffalo Bill was based on Gein and Gein was real, so wouldn't you expect that someone would bring him up?

You couldn't post anything or ask "vquest," aka "beyonder," a question without him getting his knickers in a twist. He was the one who was "negative," probably because he was totally incapable of explaining what he was attempting to say. He accused me of implying that going on a vision quest makes a man feminine and I didn't even hint at such. Then he had the audacity to "report" me for "negativity." He also couldn't spell worth a damn, even though this site has spellcheck, e.g., it isn't "guage," it's "gauge." And if all that wasn't enough, he was constantly quoting freaking Wikipedia, one of the most unreliable sources on the internet. He misspelled "y'all," too. |

He was talking about Buffalo Bill in The Silence of the Lambs and all I did was ask him if he didn't expect someone would ask about Ed Gein because that's who Buffalo was based on. There's nothing negative about that. It's a logical thing to ask in a discussion about a fictional character based on a real person. I don't know why people who are so easily offended by everything post online at all. I was thinking about joining his group Xtreme Psychology, but if he considers what I said to be total negativity, I'd get banned the first time I posted. I got the impression that he didn't like people from the South, but I'm from New York!
