Salmon - BradanWisdom, Inspiration, Rejuvenation Reversed: Futility You were right Kate, the Salmon of the Druid Animal Oracle and the Salmon of Knowledge are related. In fact, they are one and the same. In the Druid tradition, the salmon depicted on the card is called the Oldest Animal, Bradan the Salmon. It swims in the well of wisdom, the source of all life. The Irish called the well Conla's Well or the Well of Segais. The Salmon of Knowledge live in this well eating the nuts of the nine hazel trees growing around it. These hazel nuts make the salmon wise. Anyone who eats one of these salmons becomes wise as well.

In "The Wicker Man," not that crap movie with Nicolas Cage, but the original 1973 film, one of the costumes was The Salmon of Knowledge. Wonder how they came up with the idea that salmons were knowledgeable? Fish are some of the dumbest creatures on earth. Or maybe they thought fish was "brain food." If so, the Celts figured out thousands of years ago what scientists didn't figure out until recently!

The legend says that they are wise because of the hazel nuts they eat from the trees around the well. I tried to find out why the hazelnut trees symbolized knowledge, but have yet to find anything definitive.
It does sound quite similar to eating the fruits from the tree of good and evil. Perhaps this is where Christianity got its story of Adam and Eve.
As for the Salmon and the Well of Life, an obvious connection is sexual union. The well is a symbol of the womb and the salmon is the sperm. The statement that the Salmon is the Oldest Animal could be a reference to the beginning of all life.
