Second Clue: Terro ________
First Clue: restaurant ________
Following is the primary clue for Mystery Location No. 28:
The former owner of this split-level home died in a mental institution 39 years ago today. She was an attractive, vivacious businesswoman, loved by her customers and many friends. But people also felt sorry for her because she had lost four family members in a relatively short period of time.
Each day, a new clue will be posted until someone names the location, providing the street address, city and state (or province/country if located outside the US) and an explanation as to how each clue applies to the location. If no one correctly names the location, the contest will end at midnight (Eastern time), Saturday, December 10, 2016. Please note, the contest ends at midnight in the Eastern Time Zone. If you live in a different time zone, please make adjustments so you will know what time it ends where you are.
You may discuss the location with other members by posting your comments using the "reply" option, but please do not attempt to name the location until you are absolutely certain of your answer and able to post the street address, city, state, etc., along with a photo, or link to a photo, of the Location.
For those of you who remember our old Mystery Locations contest, the point system has changed. Now, if you name the location on the first day, i.e., Sunday, before midnight (ET), you will receive 7 points. Thereafter, the points will depend on the day you name the Location as indicated below. (Again, please note, each day ends at midnight in the Eastern Time Zone, so if you live, for example, in Mississippi, and you name the location at 11:30 p.m., Wednesday, you will receive 3 points because 11:30 p.m. in Mississippi is 12:30 a.m. Eastern Time.)
Sunday - 7 points Monday - 6 points Tuesday - 5 points Wednesday - 4 points Thursday - 3 points Friday - 2 points Saturday - 1 point
If you wish, you may collaborate with another member and if the two of you win, points will be divided between the two of you.
This contest is meant to be fun, so, as before, we ask that you conduct yourself accordingly. To prevent any accusations of favoritism, Joanna has been advised of the name and address of the Location and will not be participating in this week's contest.
If you have any questions or comments, please reply.

This split-level home is the former home of Anjette Lyles (pictured), a serial killer from Macon, Bibb County, Georgia. It is located at 847 Pinewood Drive, Macon, Georgia, in the Northwoods Addition subdivision. Anjette Lyles owned a popular restaurant in the 1950s, and the friendly, attractive woman was well-liked by her patrons. They could not understand how someone could be so cheerful despite her misfortune of losing so many people in her life. Her husband, the original owner of the restaurant (which at the time was named Lyles Restaurant) was the first of her victims. He was in poor health and when she found out he sold the restaurant without her consent, she never forgave him. Eventually, after his death, she bought back the restaurant and named it Anjette’s. She then started seeing a pilot for Capitol Airways named Joe Neal Gabbert. Soon, he developed a weeping rash and died, the second of her victims. With the proceeds of his life insurance policy, she was able to buy a new home (pictured) and a new car. Her first mother-in-law then moved into the home with her to be closer to the grandchildren. When Anjette went through her mother-in-law’s checkbook and realized she was quite wealthy, the woman suspiciously became ill and died, but not before a will was produced making Anjette and her daughters the beneficiaries. Anjette was feeding her food from the restaurant during this time period, which made her ill, hastened her death, and made her the third of Anjette’s victims. Not too long after, Anjette’s daughter Marcia, whom she hated and mocked, became ill, despite being only nine years old. About three weeks before the death of Marcia, the fourth victim, Carrie Jackson, a cook in Anjette's Restaurant, wrote an unsigned note that warned that Marcia was in danger. The cook was concerned because she felt Anjette was feeding her child poisoned lemonade and other drinks in the hospital. An autopsy on the child found high levels of arsenic. Exhuming the remains of Anjette’s first husband, second husband, and mother-in-law proved that they also died from arsenic poisoning. The deaths were most likely due to Terro ant poison, a common insecticide. An employee at the restaurant had seen Mrs. Lyles produce a bottle of it, which she explained as a remedy for ants at the house. Investigators also found three bottles of the poison in the kitchen cabinet, all of which were almost empty, and a purse containing another used bottle of Terro. Anjette denied being behind the killings, but in mid-October, the jury returned a verdict of guilty and sentenced her to the electric chair. A series of appeals followed and they eventually declared Anjette insane. She was sent to Georgia state's mental asylum, known as the Georgia State Sanitarium and Milledgeville State Hospital in past years. On December 4, 1977, Anjette Lyles died of heart failure at Central State Hospital in Milledgeville, as it is now known, at the age of 52. The mystery location post is dated December 4, 2016, which makes it 39 years to the date of her death.

Congratulations, Natalie.
Lee: This would make a great Today in History story. I'd like to know more about what happened and what you can find on the internet is limited.

Thank you! And I agree with Pat, I'd like to find out more about this story, a lot of the information on the internet seemed to contradict other sites, or didn't go into too much detail. The best site I found was murderpedia.org/female.L/l/lyles-anjette.htm as it provided a lot more information than other sites, and used examples as to the attacks on her oldest daughter, Marcia.

Congratulations, Natalie!
I also wish that Lee would do one of her Today in History articles about this case. I've heard some things that aren't in the short write-ups on line, and I'd really like to know all of the particulars. Of course, she still hasn't answered our questions about Fidel Castro and Santeria, so I won't hold my breath.

I'd like to know more about this case also. Another good one for Today in History is the murder case of Athalia Lindsley, who was murdered in St. Augustine, FL on January 23, 1974. Someone attacked her with a machete in front of her house in one of the best neighborhoods in St. Augustine. Everyone knew it was her next door neighbor, who was the city engineer, but he was found not guilty at his trial.

I live in Macon, GA and there are several ways to find out more about Anjette. There is a book, Whisper to the Black Candle, that details her life and the murders. There is also a City Confidential episode that can be found on YouTub about our fair city and its notorious serial killer. This is not the only house Anjette lived in. There is another that was owned by her parents that she lived in after the death of her first husband. When she married her second husband he moved in with her. It was there that she began poisoning him as well. This house is down the street from me and is currently on the market.

I'm sure Lee (graveyardbride), who does the Mystery Locations, has read the book and so on because she's from Georgia. But I didn't know there was a book, or a Confidential episode about the case and I'm sure many others didn't either. I keep up with infamous murders and had never even heard of Anjette Lyles before it became one of our Mystery Locations. I'm surprised the case hasn't been more widely publicized because women who kill usually receive more press than males.
