Spell Work: Writing Spells
Whether you’re new to the craft or an experienced solitary worker, here are some things (my take) on Spell Work I think are worth noting.
You may not agree with me and I’d like to stress: this is my personal take on things. I don’t think anyone’s wrong or right, each to their own, but if you can relate to my conclusions and draw something from that ... fantastic!
For most people who discovered The Craft when they were teenagers, like I did, I’m sure one thing that held great appeal was spell work. I know for me personally it was the first thing I did and I know many others who also jumped straight online looking up magic spells, how to cast them and what to do.
Personally, I don’t think this is the way it should be done and, while others may not agree with me and I do think it’s each to his own, I’d respect it if people could at least listen to my view on the matter and understand why I came to this conclusion.
For me personally, I don’t believe, or at least I’m skeptical, that spell work makes anything supernatural happen. I know many people won’t agree with this so please don’t think I’m stating this as fact. I feel that spell work is about meditation, a ritualistic process of focusing the mind and our inner energies to bring about change. For example, if you do a spell that helps you get a job, I believe that spell is a form of meditation that focuses your mind and which subconsciously makes you do more to get a job therefore bringing about positive change in your life.
To put it in simpler terms, spell work to me is a form of meditation and reflection. Meditation, in the common understanding of just sitting there and reflecting, just doesn’t work or cut it for me so spell work is much better because it’s meditation through action, doing symbolic things to focus your mind, to make you more conscious in your day-to-day living, and thus bring about the changes you want.
I’d like to stress that I’m not saying the supernatural doesn’t exist and that there’s no supernatural element; I’m just saying, while open minded, I’m also naturally skeptical. Either way, believe what you will, supernatural or not, I think most people who practice The Craft can say that spell work focuses the mind and (hopefully) brings about positive change. However due to my personal view point, and even from the viewpoint of spell work being of the supernatural, I have never been a fan of using someone else’s spell.
Why? Well I think spell work is personal. It’s meant to focus your mind. The idea, no matter what your belief on spell work is, is that you’re meant to put your whole heart, soul and energy into a spell to bring about the change you want. If you do it half heartedly, even if you think there are supernatural forces at work, a half-hearted spell in my eyes is lazy. Sure, you can put your energy and heart and soul into a spell you found online, but can you hand on heart say you gave it 110%?
I can already hear many people disagreeing with me and that’s honestly cool. It’s not my place or right to tell anybody they can’t or shouldn’t use someone else’s spell or that it won’t work or be less effective. The best thing about The Craft is it’s personal to each individual.
I think we have to question though where other people’s spells come from. Some are handed down, some are written by other individuals and posted online, but to me a spell is personal. It’s a prayer, a meditation. Most of the time a spell wrote by an individual will work for that person because he/she wrote it. It was personal to him or her and he/she passed it down because it worked for him/her.
Does this mean that one spell will work for everyone? I really don’t think so. I think it’s a personal experience. Every spell, every ritual, can be traced back to one individual who came up with it. What makes he/she more special than you? I think everything we do ... each move, action and word we speak … should be done in the fullest understanding and knowledge.
Also, you may get some spells and not really understand what you’re doing or saying. You’re just following instructions. How is this personal to you? How can all your energy go into something when you can’t fully understand it to its highest degree ... when you never wrote it?
So, coming to a close, some of you may agree with me but pose the question: how do you even go about writing your own spell or coming up with your own ritual? Well, it’s not that difficult.
Research colors of candles, the meanings behind them, research the meanings and uses or herbs and incense and different colors in general and then come up with your own ritual/spell.
You can draw inspiration from others works and spells to get creativity flowing. Notice how many spells are poetic. Normally, this is good as it is trance-like to the mind, like a song, and helps focus the mind.
In short, spell work should be personal to you. That’s my whole point. Every spell ever written was personal to its original owner and, while many people may disagree with me, I only ask you to do one thing: Give it a try! Next time you do a spell write it out yourself. Put 110% into it. It may be more effort and seem like a lot of work but, trust me, I can guarantee you will get better results and feel much, much better at the end of it!
