July will be 10 years since this woman was murdered, and the killer is living it up in Florida with his male "wife". I know some people who were going to that church when it happened. The pastor of the church actually said that he didn't believe Shahan was guilty, and he discouraged any gossip about the case. Of course, that didn't stop people from talking about it, and the people I know said they didn't know a single church member who thought Shahan was innocent. They left the church a few months later because of the murder and the way the church was handling things. From what I've heard from people I know in Birmingham, that was some big-shot interim pastor who kept telling church members there was no evidence Shahan was guilty. Hopefully, he changed his mind after all those queer emails came to light. I still don't understand how the bastard managed to hide his lust for men from everyone in the church. Some of the members had to have suspected he wasn't what he pretended to be, but even if they said something, they would probably have been hushed up. I knew of a minister at another Baptist church who was a compulsive womanizer on a par with the Kennedy men, and it was years before members finally started listening to what a few people were saying and got rid of him. Of course, like the Rev. Matt Baker, the whorehopper and wife-killer in Texas -- the house where he killed her was one of last year's Mystery Locations -- he just went to another church and started over.

If someone has already posted this, I apologize. The article says "There was also food in her mouth and on her chest, indicating she had just taken a mouthful of her supper when she was attacked." This means that the person who came into the house was someone she knew and someone she was comfortable enough with to continue eating. Even if she lived in a safe place where people didn't lock their back doors, friends and neighbors don't just walk in, not in a place like Alabama, where everybody has guns. The two sons weren't even in the state, so the only person it could have been was her husband.

The two sons weren't even in the state, so the only person it could have been was her husband. That's a good point. She was eating her supper and he came in, said something mundane, and she continued eating. Then he came up behind her, probably hit her over the head, thinking it would knock her out, and proceeded to stab her to death while she still had a mouthful of food. However, the ME noticed some defensive wounds so she knew who was attacking her. After that, he went through the house, opening drawers and scattering the contents, etc., and broke the glass that a neighbor heard on his way out.
As I've said before, I know people in Birmingham, and although most of the church members wore blinders, or either didn't want to admit there was something wrong with Shahan, some thought he was strange and didn't trust him. One friend of mine works with a woman who used to go to that church and she said the woman told her the relationship between the Shahans was decidedly "frosty," that there was none of the devotion one would expect in a Christian couple. It will soon be 10 years since Shahan murdered his wife and he's living it up with his new male wife in Florida.

I don't suppose there have been any updates in this case. I think it's worse when everyone knows who did it, but it just can't be proven.

Yesterday, I met some people from Birmingham who knew Karan Shahan and I asked why there was so little in the local news about what happened. They said because it embarrassed too many people in the church. I mentioned this set of articles and they asked if I would send them the link by email. I sent it and they are sharing it with other people who knew Mrs. Shahan. Thank you, Graveyardbride, for taking the time to find out and report the facts of this case.

This is the only site I've found that has really delved into this case and kept up with that SOB's whereabouts. I know Southern Baptists are a powerful force in Alabama but it's hard to believe the church was able to suppress such a brutal murder. I think if Shahan hadn't been gay, it would have been publicized more.
