Fourth clue: House Bill 2 __________
Third clue: Deutschland __________
Second clue: Semper Fidelis __________
Following is the primary clue for Mystery Location No. 1:
A mild, late fall night; a historic house; blood on the back staircase; and a million reasons for murder.
Each day, a new clue will be posted until someone names the location, providing the street address, city and state (or province/country if located outside the US) and an explanation as to how each clue applies to the location. If no one correctly names the location, the contest will end at midnight (Eastern time), Saturday, May 14, 2016. Please note, the contest ends at midnight in the Eastern Time Zone. If you live in a different time zone, please make adjustments so you will know what time it ends where you are.
You may discuss the location with other members by posting your comments using the "reply" option, but please do not attempt to name the location until you are absolutely certain of your answer and able to post the street address, city, state, etc., along with a photo, or link to a photo, of the Location.
For those of you who remember our old Mystery Locations contest, the point system has changed. Now, if you name the location on the first day, i.e., Sunday, before midnight (ET), you will receive 7 points. Thereafter, the points will depend on the day you name the Location as indicated below. (Again, please note, each day ends at midnight in the Eastern Time Zone, so if you live, for example, in Mississippi, and you name the location at 11:30 p.m., Wednesday, you will receive 3 points because 11:30 p.m. in Mississippi is 12:30 a.m. Eastern Time.)
Monday - 6 points Tuesday - 5 points Wednesday - 4 points Thursday - 3 points Friday - 2 points Saturday - 1 point
If you wish, you may collaborate with another member and if the two of you win, points will be divided between the two of you.
This contest is meant to be fun, so, as before, we ask that you conduct yourself accordingly. To prevent any accusations of favoritism, Steve has been advised of the name and address of the Location and will not be participating in this week's contest.
If you have any questions or comments, please reply.

There's something vaguely familiar about this clue, like I've heard something like it before.

It's a provocative clue, but I'm not a connoisseur of murder like some in this group.

Something about it sounds familiar to me too.

The clue is very good. People who read about true crime a lot will probably be able to figure it out with a few more clues.

We also know that if it's a "mild, late fall night" that the location is in a subtropical climate. We all know which organization uses "Semper Fidelis" as its motto, which means that the location is most likely in the U.S., specifically, the South.
I wasn't sure I'd like this new method, but I think it's going to be fun.

Like Pat and Kitty said, there's something familiar about this, like something I saw on either "Dateline" or one of the other shows that feature murder cases.

I'm almost certain that I know the answer, but I'm not completely sure yet.

Best be certain before you try to name it. You know how she always tries to trick us with her clues.
I assumed the location was in the South because of the first two clues. Just because we now know that whatever happened has something to do with Germany doesn't mean that I was wrong about it being in the South.

The location is 1810 Cedar Street in Durham, NC. It is called the John Buchanan House and it's where Michael Peterson, a novelist who had been a Marine (Semper Fidelis) and wrote about Vietnam, killed his wife, Kathleen Peterson, on December 9, 2001. She was found dead at the bottom of the back staircase. The Petersons were in debt and had been living off of credit cards for a long time and Kathleen, who was an executive at Nortel, had a million dollar life insurance policy. Michael was into sex with men and it is thought that Kathleen found evidence that he was meeting men for sex on his computer. A gay prostitute testified at the trial. The prosecution also presented evidence of a murder that occurred in Germany (Deutschland) of a woman who fell down the stairs and there was blood all over the walls, just like there was in Kathleen's fall. Peterson was friends with the woman and adopted her two children after she died. House Bill 2 is the law in North Carolina that keeps men out of women's bathrooms. There is now a documentary called "Staircase" about the case and I've heard that it tries to convince people that Michael is innocent and that Kathleen was killed by an owl.

Good work, Madeline!
I figured out that Simper Fidelis meant the Marine Corps and that Deutschland meant Germany, but that was as far as I got.

Congratulations, Maddie!
I checked the clues every day, but not being a murder aficionado, I doubt I would have ever named it. Maybe if some of the locations are haunted or famous, like they were in the old group, I'll have a better chance.
