Roswell UFO Festival
This year the Festival will be held July 3-5, 2015, so make plans to attend now! The City of Roswell invites UFO enthusiasts and skeptics alike to join in the celebration of one of the most debated incidents in history. The three-day event will feature guest speakers, authors, live entertainment, a costume contest, a pet costume contest, parade, family-friendly activities and more.
Details. There’s a little voice in many of us that wonders just what all those UFO sightings are about. Sure, perhaps many of them are mistaken identification, but all of them? Did you watch X-Files? There could be an entire government conspiracy going on!
The festival is more than people sitting around and talking about the Roswell Incident. Events involve an Alien Chase (a 5K and 10K for humans), costume contest, July 4 fireworks extravaganza, light parade, UFO art show and planetarium show. Add live music, family-friendly fun and food – and it doesn’t seem like a bad way to spend three summer days. The more scholarly portion of the festival includes lectures by speakers and authors specializing in the Roswell Incident as well as the paranormal, science fiction and alien abduction.
Why Roswell? The “Roswell Incident” refers to the July 1947 crash of an unidentified flying object (UFO) on a ranch just outside the town of Roswell. Some of those present during the incident claim to have seen a brilliant object plunge to the ground and believed the wreckage materials proved the source was otherworldly. There are the bodies and military coverup. There are stories that alien bodies were discovered at the crash site and medical personnel who dealt with them were suddenly transferred to other locations. When the Air Force announced it had all been simply the crash of a weather balloon, others involved in the incident claimed the military was hiding the evidence.
Costumes. How can you not take advantage of the rich imaginations that comes with attending a UFO festival? The costume contests are free and there’s even a pet alien costume contest, in which “pets” aren’t limited to dogs and cats, but also includes ferrets, guinea pigs “and other out-of-this-world critters.” The human categories range from most creative to scariest to TV/movie personalities. But even if your costume doesn’t fit within these categories, most of those attending are roaming the festival wearing alien sunglasses or wacky headgear. Watch for those not in costume. They are rare!
Sightseeing. Make sure you duck into the Roswell UFO Museum and Research Center during the festival. There are exhibits about the Roswell Incident, UFO sightings and a research library so you can immerse yourself in the topic. All your friends back home want a souvenir from the gift shop – you know they do. If you need a palate cleanser from all the focus on aliens, get out on the water at Bottomless Lakes State Park. Not really bottomless, the seven small lakes are bordered by high red bluffs and the perfect place to just chill out – especially when it’s hot outside.
