Flint's Whaley House prepares for month of 'haunted history'
FLINT, Mich. – The Whaley House is getting ready for what organizers are calling "a Month of Haunted History."
Psychics, ghost hunters, ghosts, and zombies will be taking over the Whaley Historic House Museum's programming this October according to a recent release from the Whaley Historic House Museum in Flint. The events begin with an almost sold-out ghost hunt of the Whaley House (there was only one ticket left as of September 10, officials said). This event will take place Saturday, September 27 at 8 p.m., and will "allow guests to search for whispers from the beyond in the Gilded-Age home."
On Saturday, October 3, Whaley House Director Samantha Engel will give a lecture at October's History Happy Hour program titled "Why Does the Nineteenth Century Seem so Creepy?" which will look at the major societal, technological and scientific changes that were taking place and causing so many to question the times in which they lived, according to the Whaley House. Engel said she didn't want to turn the museum into a house of horrors like the rest of the haunts that pop up during the month, but to utilize the house's authentic elements and emphasize haunted things that people think of during the fall. Throwbacks to period items, such as specimen vials, bird cages and the like will be found throughout the house.
On Saturday, October 11, University of Michigan-Flint students will engage a limited number of visitors in a 19th-century séance and discussion of ghost hunting during that era as period interpreters, in addition to the "haunted house" aspect of the evening. On October 18 and 24, the museum will be open for a few hours in the evening for guests to experience the haunted atmosphere.
