Is the Eunice Public Library haunted?
EUNICE, La. – Is a ghost haunting the Eunice Public Library? Librarian Jackie Choate isn’t sure, but she said there have been a number of strange occurrences. The staff would arrive in the morning to find the restroom door locked. “The door seems to have been opened, the light turned on and then relocked,” Choate said. “And adding to the mystery, this incident happened more than once.” Something also seemed to be going on with copies of a book by popular Eunice children’s author Mary Alice Fontenot. “Mary Alice Fontenot’s book went missing from our book shelves, and after replacing this book, the replacement went missing as well,” Choate said.
These and other curious incidents prompted the library to call in a group of ghost hunters who might uncover the source of the mystery. The group from On The Edge Soul Seekers will report on its findings tonight at 7 p.m. It has invited the public to listen in the library at 222 S. Second Street. Choate said the group was brought in after the library staff asked for help from Eunice native and medium Shawn Landreneau, who has had his own strange experiences at the library. “Landreneau explained that as a young boy, he used the Eunice Public Library and always felt that a figure or spirit was watching over him as he climbed the steps to the children’s department,” Choate said.
These early experiences helped generate a lifelong interest in the paranormal that caused him to team up with Nadine Stanford to form On The Edge Soul Seekers. She said the paranormal investigators have also been asked to investigate unusual occurrences at Eunice’s KBON radio station. A team from Nebraska plans to create a documentary on that investigation.
