Florence Couple's Murder Remains Unsolved 3 Years Later
Thursday marked three years since Bill and Peggy Stephenson (above), both 74, were killed inside their home in Florence, Kentucky. Detectives have interviewed more than 250 people in 14 different states since the murders and taken DNA samples from several individuals potentially connected to the case. But despite all their efforts, authorities have made no arrests nor found a match to DNA left at the crime scene.
The couple was found murdered May 29, 2011, by their son-in-law, who had gone to their home after Stephenson failed to appear for services at Union Baptist Church, where he was a deacon and his wife played the organ. Stephenson was known for his ministry at the Truckers Chapel at the Travel America Truck Stop in Florence. Why someone would kill them has detectives baffled.
“It’s been terrible on our family. It’s just been horrible,” Beth Stephenson Victor, Bill and Peggy’s daughter, said. She and her siblings have met almost weekly, sometimes with detectives, to talk and support each other, Mrs. Victor added. “I will say one thing, it’s drawn us closer as a family, but I hate it’s taken this to make us closer.” The family’s “new normal” is the pain of loss and worrying the killer or killers might want to harm another member of the family, she continued. “We live in fear every day, you know that they’re watching us, windows, blinds stayed pulled in all of our houses. I don’t go out at night a whole lot by myself.” Because the family doesn’t know why Mr. and Mrs. Stephenson were killed, they cannot be sure they are safe. “We just want it solved, we just want to know who did it and why.”
There is a $5,000 reward for information leading to a conviction and anyone having information is asked to contact the Boone County Sheriff's Office at (859) 334–8496.
