Connecticut Cold Case: Wrong Body ExhumedIn August 1975, the body of a young woman approximately 5'5" with brown hair was discovered in a ditch in East Haven, Connecticut. “There was nothing on her that could identify who she was,” retired New Haven Police Officer Tony Griego recalled. Never identified, she was eventually laid to rest in Hamden’s State Street Cemetery.
With recent advances in DNA technology, investigators decided to exhume the corpse in an attempt to identify the individual, but when the grave was unearthed and the coffin opened, the remains inside turned out to be those of a male.
Because of the cemetery’s poor record-keeping the coordinates provided were incorrect. “They never marked the grave and that’s part of the challenge as we try and locate her actual burial site,” explained Captain Joseph Murgo of the East Haven Police.
Through the years, there have been several suspects in the case. Sources: Lawrence Richard, Fox News, June 11, 2022; and WTNH.
