I lived in the same apartment building as Mary Simpson. Our family lived on the second floor and she lived on the floor above us. I was 13 at the time and I had never seen her in the building. We did have police detectives visit our apartment but were unable to provide any help. Shortly after that my mom and us four kids moved out to another apartment building. I understand that DNA was taken. May I suggest that it be compared to the DNA of the Spahalski brothers, Robert and Stephen Spahalski both in prison for separate murders. Stephen's murder victim was in Elmira while Robert's victims were in Rochester, NY. Both are presently in prison. They were probably too young when Mary was murdered, they were nine. My mother actually was married to their father at one time. I'm not saying that they were guilty of Mary's death but I would have hoped that their DNA was checked out with Mary's. The Spahalskis were a big family. Two 9 year old boys could kill a 12 year old girl, but the original article says that one of the stones over the spot where she was buried weighed a hundred pounds and they couldn't have lifted a stone that heavy.

I knew about this story since I was 5 yrs old. Ill be 48 on a couple days. My mother and her were supposed to be friends. She told me things in detail that probably were not released to the public. She actually showed me exactly were she was found. My family was not great so ive always wondered if it was my grandfather or one of my uncle's. So I did contact Elmira PD unsolved cases. I offered my dna to rule a family member out they just ignored me and never got back to me.

A familial DNA search would get the police pointed in the right direction. If they determine who did it, that person may very well be deceased since it's been nearly 60 years - but at least the case could be closed and Mary Theresa's loved ones would have answers.
