Monkeys Kill Dogs in 'Revenge' Attacks Monkeys in Majalgaon, a small town in India, are taking revenge on the local dog population after a dog maliciously killed an infant monkey. Thus far, it is estimated at least 250 small dogs and puppies have been caught by monkeys, carried high up into trees, to the tops of buildings or onto utility lines and tossed to their deaths.
Locals believe the monkeys are taking revenge on the dogs, because dogs kill solely for sport, unlike wild animals, which kill only for food or out of fear.
Those who live in the region said there are barely any dogs left in the area and the attacks continue. In the neighboring village of Lavool, monkeys have totally eradicated the dog population. According to Stephanie Poindexter, an assistant professor at SUNY Buffalo who studies primate behavior, studies have shown that some animals – primarily monkeys – may kill out of revenge. “We’ve seen that when an individual is attacked in some way, the likelihood of them attacking someone related to their aggressor is higher,” she explained. “Typically there’s a preference for attacking a third-party associated with the original aggressor, as opposed to the actual aggressor ... for the most part, these acts of ‘revenge’ take place shortly after the attack.” In addition to monkeys, Poindexter said groups of hyenas have been known to seek revenge on an aggressor’s companions instead of the actual aggressor. We need to start importing monkeys! I don't like monkeys; they're ugly and filthy like dogs, but at least they don't bark.
