Skeleton of 98-foot 'Sea Serpent' Discovered by DiverIn 2017, a gigantic, serpentine skeleton approximately 98 feet in length was discovered by an oil and gas industry diver controlling a remotely-operated vehicle (ROV) in the Mediterranean Sea.
The vertebral column lies almost in a straight line at more than 2,700 feet below sea level and the bones are larger at one end. When the diver picked up one of the vertebra utilizing the claw of the ROV, the bone crumbled into tiny particles as soon as it reached the surface.
According to Deborah Hatswell, investigator of the strange and unusual, “The dimensions of the skeleton on the video does not fit with the usual size for any sea life in the area.”
Some suggested the remains could be those of a hammerhead shark or whale. “A whale has three blades on its spinal bones each spaced 120 degrees apart and this creature seems to have only two,” Hatswell countered. “I checked out living sea mammals and came up short of 30 meters (98 feet). I had a look at the usual suspects – whales, oarfish and sea snakes.”
The diver who spotted the mysterious skeleton believes the remains could be of ancient origin. “The bone could be very ancient,” he told Hatswell. “I have seen many clay amphora sticking out of the mud and they have been there potentially for thousands of years.”
While many outright deny the existence of large serpent-like aquatic beasts, more than 80 percent of the world is covered by water and there are many mysteries yet to be discovered in the ocean’s depths.
