New Documentary Examines Marilyn Monroe’s Death, Others
Cold Case: History, a new series, will use state-of-the-art forensic and archaeological methods to reinvestigate several high-profile cases, including, but not limited to, the purported suicide of Marilyn Monroe, the 1890 death of Vincent Van Gogh, the Princes in the Tower, and the brutal murder of Pharaoh Ramses III.
The producers are saving Marilyn Monroe’s untimely and controversial death for last. In August 1962, the 36-year-old actress was found lying face-down on her bed with the telephone in her hand. She was nude and there were several empty pill bottles in the room. She was under the care of both a medical doctor and psychiatrist, both of whom had prescribed medications for her insomnia and depression. According to the toxicology report, she died of a massive overdose of Nembutal (pentobarbital) and although her death was labeled a suicide, through the years, there have been numerous theories that she was murdered, either because of sensitive information to which she became privy during her relationships with President John F. Kennedy and his brother Bobby, the attorney general, or because she was going to the press to reveal her affairs with the two most powerful men in the country.
In 1985, Los Angeles Police Chief Daryl Gates claimed that despite “numerous public requests for access to the reports related to her death,” he wasn’t convinced that any new information or insight would ever be discovered. “There are no surprises whatsoever; it was a very straight suicide,” he said during a news conference at the time. “There were 45 Nembutals, I believe, barbiturates. There was nothing unusual about it. She was under a doctor’s care and had been distressed. The evidence showed she was stressed and she took her own life.”
The show is scheduled to begin production this fall. “Developing this series has been an exciting journey with each episode unraveling a mystery,” Ralf Rueckauer, vice president of ZDFE.unscripted, said. “It’s been fascinating to see modern-day forensics at work dispelling age-old theories, particularly in the case of Marilyn Monroe, where we have unearthed new evidence and testimony.”
