Loud, House-Shaking Boom Reported in KansasA series of loud booms shook southern Wichita Saturday afternoon, leaving thousands of people as far away as Haysville and Marion County wondering what caused them.
Beginning around 1:40 p.m., Sedgwick County emergency dispatchers fielded numerous calls about “possible explosions.” Ruby Welch posted on Facebook that the boom “shook” her house and she thought “something blew up in the neighborhood.”
A spokesperson from the National Earthquake Information Center confirmed its recording equipment hadn’t shown any evidence of an earthquake. KAKE also reached out to McConnell Air Force Base, but there has been no response. Some people have speculated it was a meteor and the American Meteor Society agreed it was the best answer as to what caused the boom, but this hasn’t been confirmed.
Others believe the noise was a sonic boom and some claimed to have seen strange objects in the sky, but this hasn’t been confirmed either. Photos circulating on social media show pictures of a light in the sky, however, at least one of these has been debunked. Source: KAKE, November 2, 2019.
