Salem has acquired yet another spooky distinction to add to its resumé after what is touted as the world’s largest Ouija board made its debut on Salem Common, Saturday, October 12.
“Ouijazilla” is the creation of Rick “Ormortis” Schreck, vice president of the Talking Board Historical Society, a “non-profit dedicated to researching, preserving and celebrating the history of talking boards,” according to the society’s website. The board weighs a whopping 9,000 pounds and is so large five full-size 18-wheelers could park on it. The planchette – the piece that moves around on the Ouija board – is roughly 400 pounds, big enough for a grown man to stand in.
Ripley's Believe it or Not says Ouijazilla holds the “unofficial title for World’s Largest Ouija Board” at 3,168 square feet. This is much larger than the Guinness World Record holder, a 1,300-square-foot board built in 2016 atop a purportedly haunted hotel in Windber, Pennsylvania.
