Man Beaten to Death with Bat over Barbecue Carving TechniqueJACKSONVILLE, Fla. – A man was arrested Wednesday in connection with the death of a 31-year-old man who police say was hit in the head with a baseball bat. Alvin Kenneth Welch Jr., 35, is charged with Murder/Dangerous Act Evincing a Depraved Mind Without Premeditation in the death of Joshua Andrew Heinz (above), according to a Jacksonville Sheriff’s Office Arrest Report.
Heinz was at a party at his house on the Southside watching NFL football Saturday night when an argument broke out over barbecue just before midnight, according to the JSO. A JSO incident report states a man known only as “Chico,” later found to be Welch, was in the kitchen cutting the barbecue when Heinz began to argue with him about the way he was cutting it.
A witness to the fight told JSO he saw the argument, but when he turned his back, he heard a noise and then saw Heinz on the ground and a bat in Welch’s hand. The witness grabbed the bat from Welch before he fled the scene out the back door, according to the incident report.
JSO responded following the fight and found Heinz lying on the floor of the living room with a large bruise on his head. He was conscious, but unable to speak. Sgt. Michael Paul told the Florida Times-Union that Heinz died at St. Vincent’s Medical Center early Sunday morning. The incident happened in the 11000 block of North Santa Fe Street off St. Johns Bluff Road on the Southside. Source: WTLV News, January 8, 2014.
