In the Southern states, people also honor their Confederate dead.

When someone says "God bless you" to me, I just say thank you. I don't care what religion it comes from, all the matters to me is that the person meant to wish me their highest wishes. It's all about intention.
Similarly, I don't get all freaked out if someone says to me Merry Christmas, Happy Hanukkah, Blessed Yule, whatever. I appreciate the sentiment, and even say the same thing in return.
