Has anyone been watching "The Woman in White" on PBS? I ordered the DVD and just started watching it. It's not completely like the book, but so far, it's interesting. For example, Count Fosco is an obese Italian in the book, but in the film, he a somewhat attractive ladies' man. The US/Canadian format isn't available yet, so I had to order it in Region 2 format. When I placed my order, the seller sent a message asking if I knew it was Region 2 and I told the seller I wouldn't have ordered it if I didn't have a region-free DVD player, which I suppose, was a little snarky. The seller claimed that a lot of Americans and Canadians don't check the format when they're ordering DVDs and when they try to watch it on their equipment, it won't play, so they accuse the seller of sending them a defective DVD.

I still don't understand the difference between DVDs from Britain and those from here. In the prize list for the Mystery Locations, there's a note that says: "These DVDs are in PAL format and will not play on Region 1 (US/Canada) DVD equipment. So if you're in the US or Canada and do not have a region-free DVD player or a TV/DVD player combo less than 10 years old, do not choose these DVDs." whatliesbeyond.boards.net/thread/5375/mystery-locations-prize-list-additions What exactly is the difference and how can you be sure that you're ordering the right kind of DVD?

PAL (Phase Alternating Line) is a color-coding system used in the UK, other parts of Europe and parts of Asia, Africa, South America and, of course, Wusstralia. Instead of using our format, NTSC (National Television Standards Committee), the Brits had to be different. What do you expect from people who drive on the wrong side of the road and whose carousels turn in the wrong direction? PAL won't play on NTSC equipment and vice versa. But if you're like Maddie and have a region-free DVD player, you can watch either. So if you ever get enough points to win a prize and don't have region-free equipment, make sure you don't pick anything in PAL format.

I've been watching The Woman in White on PBS, but I'm having a hard time keeping up with it. All the indoor scenes are very dark and you really can't see what's going on.
