Full Wolf Supermoon Jan. 1, 2018!On Jan. 1, 2018, Earth will come closest to the moon at 4:54 p.m. (EST), and the moon will enter its full phase at 9:24 p.m., making the Full Wolf Moon a supermoon, the second in a “supermoon trilogy” that began with the moon on December 3.
Different cultures around the world have given various names to each full moon of the year. In America, the first full moon of the year is called the Wolf Moon because it was at this time that the hungry wolves howled outside Indian villages. The Colonial settlers adopted the name for the same reason. The January moon is also called The Old Moon.
Moonrise Monday, Jan. 1, will be as follows:
Lubec, Maine - 4:53 p.m. Savannah, Georgia - 5:25 p.m. Hannibal, Missouri - 4:49 p.m. Colorado Springs, Colorado - 4:48 p.m. Great Falls, Montana - 4:46 p.m. Pasadena, California - 3:38 p.m.Sources: Kevin Loria, Business Insider, December 29, 2017, and The Old Farmer's Almanac.
