To Jane, Julia, Lee, JahaRa, wolfscratch, markw, idk7704 and any other members of our group who served in the US armed forces: Thank you for your service!
On this day, we honor all who served in the US military. In the Southern states, those who fought for the Confederate States of America are also honored.

People who have never served in the armed forces really have no concept of the sacrifices military personnel make in their day-to-day lives, even in peace time. Military service involves so much more than simply doing a job, it's a total commitment and once you're sworn in, the government dictates where you live, how you dress, what you do, literally every aspect of your life.

I don't mean to be disrespectful, but if you lose all of your freedom, why did you join?

I joined during the Vietnam era when the Army was trying to recruit women for clerical work, so that the men could fight. Some people may think this is a terrible thing to say, but I liked the service a lot better during wartime than in peacetime.

I don't mean to be disrespectful, but if you lose all of your freedom, why did you join? In addition to a salary, the Navy paid my student loans, which even in the 60s and 70s, were considerable. But I also didn't mind giving up some of my freedoms to serve my country. That's just one of the many sacrifices that military members make.
