Mothman-Type Creature Reported in Chicago
Reports of strange flying humanoids continue. There have been two additional sightings of the mysterious creature in the skies along Lake Michigan. Both witnesses describe a large, bat-like humanoid figure flying above Calumet Park. The reports, submitted to UFO Clearinghouse, are in the initial stages of investigation.
The first occurred Thursday, April 27, around 7:30 p.m. The observer reported:
I was out with my son by the banks of the Little Calumet, on the Northwestern side off of Hedgewisch Park at a spot where we have had some success catching fish in the past. It’s located by the trestle bridge that runs east to west over near 130th street. It’s a spot that takes a little effort to get to, but it has had some payoffs in catching some medium sized catfish.
It was about 7:30pm and we were packing up our gear when we heard something that sounded like train brakes when the train slowing down. The problem was there was no train going by at the moment. When the train goes by, you usually feel it going by, you also hear it as it’s pretty loud. On this day, it was quiet with the occasional sound of trucks or cars going about. We heard the sound again and saw something fly from our left toward some trees on the other side of the river. We thought it looked like a giant bird, but it was solid black. Within a minute, we heard the sound again and this thing straight up and over the trestle bridge and headed off down the river. This thing was unlike any bird we have seen in our lives. It was solid black and had to be about the size of a full grown man. It had wings that must have been 10 feet from tip to tip. It flew up and out of sight within seconds. We couldn’t really get many details as this thing flew like a literal bat out of hell and was still on the other side of the river.
We stood there and watched it fly away, I was just blown away but then my son piped up and said he had read about some giant bat sightings that have occurred in Chicago lately, maybe this was one of them. We packed up our gear and got the hell out of there as fast as we could. We didn’t want this thing to come back and see us there as we were not supposed to be there fishing in the first place. Later that night my son showed me the websites where the reports were listed and that lead me to report this sighting. I’m sorry that I couldn’t give you more details on this thing, but frankly, I thank my lucky stars that we weren’t close enough to see any details.
The second took place eight days later on Friday, May 5, around 8 p.m. According to the witness:
I was out with my son at Calumet Park at about 8pm walking the trail as we have since he was about 6 years old. We were talking about what was going on within our lives and about what our plans were for the upcoming summer. As we walked toward the field house, we were overflown by what I thought was a large goose as we have seen multiple geese flying around the city and suburbs within the last couple of months. As we watched, it quickly became apparent that this was not a goose, but something much bigger.
I can describe it as a large bat, but it had a distinct human figure about 6 feet in height per my estimates. It was blackish/grayish in color and had an enormous pair of wings that must have been 8 to ten feet in width. My son was in complete shock and asked me what that thing was, my response was an equally surprised ‘I don’t know.’ This bat flew up and over the Fieldhouse and toward where the tennis courts would be. I heard a couple yell out in surprise as this bat flew up and over the Fieldhouse and out of view. The entire encounter lasted about 30-35 seconds from the initial sighting to it flying up and over the Fieldhouse and out of sight.
I estimated the speed of this bat to be at least 40-50 MPH and it to be at least 15-20 feet above us as it was just over the top of the streetlights. It was dusk, but the sun had just started to set so there was enough light to still get a good view of the object as it flew overhead. I was only able to get a general description as it flew over us at speed and it prohibited getting any finer details of it. We went around the Fieldhouse and tried to see if we could see anything on the other side, but did not get any other views of this creature. The rest of the evening went without incident and I only decided to report this after reading some reports of similar sightings within the city online.
The first reported sighting of the creature occurred April 7 and the witness report to the UFO Clearinghouse reads as follows:
I’m writing this out after taking a day or two to really, really think out if I wanted to report this and tell others of what I saw the other night in Oz park here in Chicago. I finally decided that writing this out and submitting it would be therapeutic to me and might hopefully help identify what it was that I saw and maybe help someone else avoid the same thing.
I live in the Lincoln Park neighborhood in the city of Chicago and live about 1½ blocks from Oz Park. When the weather is nice, I usually go outdoors and to the park to jog and walk my dog. The night of April 7th was no different, it was mild and the cold weather had finally subsided so I decided to give the treadmill a break and go outside to jog and let the dog get some fresh air. As I came to the corner of Burling St and Webster Avenue where I cross the street to the park, my dog began acting very peculiar and acted like she didn’t want to go to the park. This is very strange as usually my dog goes absolutely nuts when we go to the park and has the time of her life running and sniffing. On this particular evening, she acted like she was mortified to cross the street and enter the park.
As we crossed the street and came up to the area where the basketball courts are located and the start of the trail that goes around and through the park, my dog was practically being dragged as she resisted wanting to continue. After much effort, I finally got her to finally cooperate and begin the walk. I started walking East toward the Oz Garden, a route that is my usual when I come here to walk or to jog. As we walked toward the garden, I noticed that many of the birds you usually hear in the park were all but silent and that the only noise you could here was the usual city noise from the surrounding neighborhood.
As we rounded the sidewalk to head south with the garden to my left, I heard what could only be described as the flapping of wings. I really didn’t give it a second thought as I assumed it would be some passing Canadian Geese that I’ve seen in the park recently. As we came toward the clearing where you would find the Baseball fields, something caught my eye and what I saw still scares the crap out of me. I saw a large man, probably 7 feet or taller standing on the ground. It was solid black, but what really stood out were the large, and I do mean large pair of wings that were folded behind him. These wings stood taller than the man by at least a foot and a half and jutted out of his back. I could not see it’s face as it had its face turned away from me and probably didn’t notice me at first. It finally turned and noticed me and I saw the bright, ruby red eyes that appeared to glow from within. It was at this time that it turned and faced me and I got to see what it really looked like.
It was about 7 feet tall, and instead of clothes, it looked like a giant half man, half bird kind of thing. It reminded me of the character Birdperson from the show Rick and Morty, only a LOT scarier! This thing stared at me for about 15 seconds, which felt like an eternity and then in a loud whoosh it unfurled its wings and screeched really loud, and jetted into the air. These wings looked almost bat-like and were at least 10 feet across from tip to tip. I felt like this thing could see right through me, read me, it knew what I was thinking, like it could stare right into my very soul. It was the most terrified I have ever been in my life. It rose into the air like a bullet and I heard it screech once more before losing it from my view as it rose above the trees and possibly the buildings. It was at that time that I realized that I had yet to scream or react in any way. I was just numb, numb from my head to my toes. I finished my walk early and walked home, all the while trying to see if I could see it again once I got to the street.
It was the scariest thing I have ever experienced and it lead me to look up giant mutant birds online and eventually came to sights talking about similar sightings that other people have had and eventually to where I could post and report my own sighting. I don’t want you to think that I am crazy, I’m just a normal person who had a weird and strange experience. I do not abuse drugs or take any kind of hallucinogens or anything like that. I know what I saw was real and that I saw it in Oz Park, in Chicago, Illinois. I don’t want publicity at all, I just want to tell my story and to warn others who might jog or walk the trails of Oz Park. I never felt like I was in any real kind of danger, if I did not provoke it. But, I felt that this creature could have ripped me limb for limb if I had approached it or threatened it in any way. Maybe it was passing through like the Canadian Geese do when they are migrating. Either way, I hope that we never get to meet face to face again.
Three other witnesses reported seeing the unidentified flying humanoid between 10 p.m., April 15, and 2 a.m., April 16.
These reports now bring the number of sightings of this bird- or bat-like flying humanoid to six over the course of six weeks, and up to eight over the past six years if one includes the 2011 sightings, which took place in the same area.
Some are comparing the sighting flap to that of the Mothman phenomenon of the mid-1960s. Mothman haunted Point Pleasant, West Virginia, from November 12, 1966, to December 15, 1967, and was known for his large wingspan, glowing red eyes, and propensity for suddenly appearing in front of witnesses.

Some believe the Mothman was a harbinger of doom because the sightings stopped when the bridge fell. Could something terrible be about to happen in Chicago?

These sightings are confined to a single location, which makes me think someone using a hologram projector might be creating this flying humanoid. Of course, that doesn't explain the noises heard during some of the sightings, which wouldn't be as easy to create.

Chicago 'Mothman' Sightings Now Number 13
Two new reports submitted to UFO Clearinghouse bring the total number of sightings of a large, bat-like creature in Chicago to 13 thus far in 2017. The first report took place May 27, 2017, and describes a large, black, bat-like being with glowing red eyes:
I would like to tell you about an incident that happened on Saturday, May 27, 2017 near our home in Chicago. We were returning home after going out to dinner with some friends at a neighborhood Thai food restaurant. The time was about 10:30ish at night and we were walking hand-in-hand toward home. As we approach the intersection of Wrightwood and Lakeview (N. Wrightwood Ave & N. Lakeview Ave.) my husband noticed something flying above us headed toward the west. It was flying approximately 15 feet in the air and moving along at brisk pace. It looks like a giant bat only it was way larger and solid black. The object would have been almost solid black if it were not for 2 glowing red eyes staring back at us. It flew overhead, circled back and flew over us again before heading back toward the park. This object was far larger than anything I have ever seen in and around the park or the lakefront.

I’ve seen large birds in the area but could recognize them as birds and nothing grew even close to the size of this thing was. My husband said that whatever it was “was not of this world” and “if it was, it was undiscovered,” but he was absolutely speechless and could not provide an explanation for what we saw.
We discussed it all the way home and afterward, I did some searching on the internet for a possible explanation when I ran across report sightings, some of them very close to our neighborhood. I showed them to my husband who still remains skeptical and said that we should not report what we saw. He stated that no one would believe that we saw a huge man-bat flying over Chicago and that people would possibly laugh at us. I reported it because I want to have an explanation to what we saw that night.
Neither one of us are crazy and we both saw exactly the same thing. We just want to have an explanation to what we saw that night. My husband said he wanted to just put it behind him but if I wanted to report it, then I was more than welcome to … so that’s what I did. Perhaps somebody can provide a perfectly logical explanation of what we saw in the night sky. Thank you for your time and attention and I hope to hear from you soon.
The second, which took place more recently, Friday, June 23, depicts a very similar entity seen by multiple witnesses in a crowded area.
I want to tell you about a sighting that happened on Friday the 23rd of June at about 9:30 p.m. by the Adler Planetarium in Chicago, Illinois. My girlfriend and I are spending the weekend in Chicago and we took a walk around the Adler and Shedd Aquarium so she could try to get some more Pokemon. We were spending our anniversary together downtown and wanted to visit the museum campus. We were at the backside of the Adler Planetarium and had walked along the path toward the food court.
We ordered some food and sat down when there was commotion and a bunch of people were shouting and pointing at the sky. We both got up and went to look what was going on and saw a large black bat like creature headed away from us. When we asked people what they had seen we were told that they had seen a large bat. Everyone described it as a large bat like creature that also had human-like features. What we saw was flying away from us but supported what everyone else has seen as looking like a large bat.
What we saw was flying away from us but supported what everyone else has seen as looking like a large bat. We hung around for about 30 minutes after that looking up at the sky as was everybody else. No one saw or heard anything for the remainder of time that we were there. There was a feeling of uneasiness amongst the people who were there and many shortly departed right before we did.
All the sightings have taken place in the lakefront area within a few miles of Lake Michigan. The sightings generally take place in the evening or at night, often in or near a park, and witnesses consistently describe a large, bat-like creature with humanoid features. So far, no pictures or video have been forthcoming.

Winged Humanoid Sighting in Cicero
I received the following information on Wednesday, August 2, 2017:
Last Summer, I believe in early August (2016), on my commute home, I got off the bus and started walking about a block-and-a-half near West Roosevelt Road and South 59th Avenue in Cicero. It was a warm night and I could hear and see all the usual things happening (it wasn’t unusual for me to see bats flying around and landing in or on a chimney). But this night something caught the corner of my eye I figured it was just another bat and I really didn’t pay it much attention. Then it happened again, but then I had this eerie feeling come over me ... like something was watching and again I saw something swoop by, near a opening approximately 15 feet above me and about 10 feet to the right of me as I was facing south.
As I turned my head upward, I looked at the streetlight (that was across the street). I thought I saw something perched on top of it. I thought my mind was playing tricks on me. I started to squint to try to focus more on what I thought was on top of the streetlight and couldn’t see it too well because the light was in my eyes. It was only when I raised my hand to partially block the light and I could see clearly there was something perched on the streetlight that was very large in size. When I was finally able to see it better, it stood up. As I was stricken with fear and curiosity at the same time, I was able to see that its head came to a point with red-amber glowing eyes. It flapped its wings twice, and was airborne and took off towards the north.
This is the first time me mentioning any of this to anybody, but when I read the article about other people seeing the same thing I had that feeling of fear and curiosity come over me again and I felt compelled to tell my story. I lost a lot of sleep over it trying to reconcile in my mind what I saw. It was real and when I came across the post, I got a flashback of what happened last year. – Tony G.
I contacted the witness and received additional information: The witness works in security ... and is apparently well-known in the club industry throughout Chicago. He was apprehensive about being ridiculed if he mentioned his experience. The witness was walking south on South 59th Avenue when he had the encounter. He stated to me that the winged humanoid was dark in color, at least 7 feet in height and that the wing span was approximately 10 feet or so. It was perched on two human-like legs. He also mentioned that he noticed a short pointed crest on the head. There was no noise or sounds made by the being and when it ascended from the streetlight, it took two flaps of its wings and was swiftly aloft. He said that when this being looked at him, he instantly became frightened ... and that this fear was imprinted on him. Tony was very forthcoming and didn’t embellish his description of the being or the incident.
Note: This is the 2nd sighting in which the being was said to have a crest on its head. I am more confident there have been at least three separate beings observed during this wave of sightings ... now going back to August 2016. Any updates will be included with this post.

Another Flying Humanoid Sighting
According to a recent post in Midlothian Topix, there has been another flying humanoid sighting in the Chicago area:
“I was on my way delivering a pizza in Midlothian on Thursday night (October 19, 2017) and was at the dead end on Waverly Ave. and Clifton Park Ave. Went to turn my truck and saw a HUGE dark figure standing on a concrete ledge in front of a massive wood fence. It was BIGGER than that fence!!! LIKE 10 FEET TALL!!
“This thing was swaying in the wind. I turned my brights on it and this thing was like a DEMON NOT A MAN ... had a dark color like a dirty grey skin. It opened its wings and flew off in a second, sideways right above the houses. I did make a call and they said it would be looked into. WTF.” – Alex
According to an article in the National Examiner, there have been at least 29 alleged sightings of the mothman-type creature this year alone. Lon Strickler, who researches paranormal phenomena, is quoted as saying: “I have long theorized that the Mothman and other unknown winged beings are multidimensional life forms ... that can be summoned by the high-energy incorporeal entities that reside on our Earth plane.”

2017 Mothman Sightings in Chicago
The level-headed are going to have a tough time believing there’s a huge half man-moth creature terrorizing Chicago. However, according to many, this is exactly what happened during 2017 when there were numerous sightings of the creature.
The original Mothman began appearing to residents of a small town in 1966 and 1967, ostensibly to warn of an impending catastrophe, i.e., the collapse of the Silver Bridge in the town of Point Pleasant, West Virginia. The story of the strange creature was recounted by John Keel in his book, The Mothman Prophecies, which was later turned into a movie starring Richard Gere.
Now the Mothman has turned up in Chicago. Lon Strickler, a Fortean researcher, has compiled the sightings on his website and also written a book called The Mothman Dynasty, which takes a look at all the Mothman reports since the latter half of the 1970s.
The latest spate of Mothman sightings began in February 2017 and since that time, Strickler has spent many hours interviewing witnesses who claimed to have seen the creature, and documented their stories. Among the witnesses is John Amitrano, who reported he was working late one night at a popular Chicago hangout and when he went outside, saw something he found difficult to explain. He recalled seeing a plane overhead, but there was something moving awkwardly beneath it. He claimed whatever it was took on the appearance of what pterodactyls look like in illustrations, with a slender head and wings. He didn’t think it was a bat or bird because it didn’t appear to have feathers or fur and did not fly like a bat or bird, or anything else he could think of. According to Amitrano, the creature had muscular legs, a human-like shape and flew in a strange manner, swooping down and then undulating up and then down again.
Amitrano’s sighting is one of 55 sightings that have been reported in the Chicago area during 2017. Many witnesses have seen the Mothman flying in the sky, however, there were other accounts of the creature alighting on the hoods of vehicles and swooping downward toward witnesses. According to Stickler, “the group sightings of the Mothman are historical in cryptozoology terms,” because the incidents occurred in an urban area and there have been so many reports.
Strickler said he uses the West Virginia Mothman Sightings from the 1960s as a reference point, but doesn’t believe the Chicago creature is warning residents of an impending disaster. The beings, he continued, aren’t as aggressive as the one at Point Pleasant. He also believes the Pleasant Point sightings involved a single creature.
Dr. David A. Gallo, a psychologist at the University of Chicago, has conducted memory research and how people reconstruct the past – sometimes inaccurately. He disagreed with Strickler’s assessment of the sightings. Gallo indicated the sample is selective and when people choose to report the sightings, this is the only data on which paranormal researchers base their conclusions, i.e., they do not ask random people if they have seen the Mothman. Nevertheless, the psychologist doesn’t deny those who claim to have espied the creature have seen something they cannot explain, but noted when there are gaps or holes in an experience, the mind often fills in those gaps. Accordingly, if something has been suggested, such as the Mothman, the person might add this to his or her scenario.
For now, however, the Mothman remains a mystery. Did people actually see a strange moth-like creature the size of a man? Or did they see something they couldn’t identify and their mind filled in the blanks?

Even if that's true, that people's minds fill in the blanks, they're still seeing something that they can't explain. Birds and bats are easy to identify because of the way they fly.

Notice how this Mothman sighting is associated with a bridge. West Virginia had the Silver Bridge that collapsed after the sightings.
Justice League had a Mothman too.

I dunno. I don't know what the Mothman is, if it's a cryptid or some supernatural being. If it's a cryptid, that means it's some strange animal that exists, but that we don't know anything about, like Bigfoot. Nobody knows why supernatural beings appear, or even if they're real. Some think that the Mothman flap in the 60s was a case of mass hysteria.

I believe in a duality in everything. So one side reflects the other but usually in a distorted way like a fun house mirror. Nature can reflect man. Even two sides of an ocean can reflect each other. It's not always copycatting. Not when they're not aware of each other. Of course they are a matter of interpretation and there's no certainty that something bad or good will happen. After the fact, it looks "obvious" it meant this or that.
