Monuments to Confederate heroes are a reminder of what our country went through more than 150 years ago. Many of these memorials are dedicated to men who not only served in the Confederate army, but to those who served in the US army before they were forced to abandon their military careers and defend their homes and families. It is important to save these monuments for future generations so that all may see and learn about them and those who sacrificed everything in their endeavor to preserve states’ rights. These were brave men, good men and religious men. We beg the president, vice president and others in authority to stop the purge of American history in cities and towns across the South. Failing to do so places our citizens on the same level as ISIS and the Taliban, who have systematically destroyed ancient sites, churches and synagogues in the Middle East. Those who deny history are doomed to repeat it.

I signed! Removing these memorials is shameful. They've been in New Orleans for more than a hundred years and no one objected until now. You're right, erasing history makes us no better than ISIS.

I'm from Upstate New York and now live in Maine. Growing up and all through school and college, I learned just one side of what resulted in, and what transpired during, the Civil War. It wasn't until I was in the Navy and serving at the Naval hospital in Charleston, South Carolina, a charming place, or at least it was then, that I became truly aware of the "other side." I found the monuments to the Confederacy and how Southerners still displayed and honored the Confederate flag charming. The South wouldn't be "the South" without its Confederate heritage and I intensely oppose removing statues and other memorials to the Confederacy, or the Confederate flag. I hope President Trump saves these monuments because in so doing, he will be preserving an important part of American history.

I was not aware of a desire to remove these monuments. Who or what organization is wanting to remove them? Is there an article about it that we can read? This is the first time I hear about this.

What a beautiful comment.
