Celebrity Hangover Cures
Many of us will try and convince ourselves once again that this New Year's Eve is going to be different. We won't be on the sauce all night, we'll just have a few drinks, and maybe a shot, and go home at 1 a.m. at the very latest. But it seems the minute we make that promise it is quickly laughed off and when 3 a.m. comes around, we're propped up by the bar after too many Jägerbombs before waiting in a two-hour long line for a taxi because there are no buses running that late.
Sadly, the celebs don't have that problem and celebrate in a very different way – yachts, mansion parties, VIP club nights with no waiting and a constant flow of free bubbly. Oh, the life. But while they may mark the start of the New Year with more extravagance, they still suffer the same headache, blurred vision and maybe even a vomiting session the following morning. Over the years, many stars have attempted to offer expert advice when it comes to hangover cures, after all, they do have to deal with more of them than the rest of us. Here are some of the best from Gwyneth Paltrow to Cameron Diaz ....
Gwyneth Paltrow. The actress, who is the creative director of lifestyle website Goop, unsurprisingly came up with one of the more bizarre cures, in fact, it sounds like we’d be worse off after the cure. She says: "Just draw a bath that is as hot as you can handle it and mix in some Epsom salts and baking soda. Soak for 20 minutes and then pop into a freezing-cold shower for one minute. Get back in the hot bath and stay until you're warmed up. Then get back in the shower for one more minute."
Julia Roberts. The Pretty Woman star is more our kind of woman when it comes to hangovers. She suggests drinking even more booze, but not just a glass of wine, she thinks you should get back on the bubbles, you know, because we're all made of money. She says: "The secret is to find a balance between Champagne and carrot juice. It works for me when I alternate between the two."
Nigella Lawson. If you aren't someone who keeps a full pantry, you might need to pay a visit to a supermarket before your night out if you're going to listen to Nigella. She advises: "My hangover cure is the 'prairie oyster,' which consists of an egg yolk, Tabasco, Worcestershire sauce, brandy, and vinegar. You have to swallow it down in one gulp."
Russell Crowe. The actor is clearly a man of few words, all of them wise. Russell thinks the old "hair of the dog" is the only way to cure a hangover. "Get going again with tequila on the rocks," he advises. "If you only drink that stuff, you won’t get a hangover in the first place!"
Cameron Diaz. The Holiday star does exactly what most of us do, heads to McDonald's. Smart woman. Although, we'd also suggest ordering a large coke with a lots of ice cubes. She says: "I have an Egg McMuffin and a beer. You need to drink more of the alcohol you've killed yourself with – the classic hair of the dog."
Jamie Oliver. The British chef claims his recipe for "huevos rancheros" is the "ultimate hangover cure." It's a Mexican dish with eggs, tomatoes, peppers and cheese served on tortillas.
Daniel Craig. The James Bond star has the most obvious advice for a hangover – sweat it out. It does work, he says, and spending even 10 minutes in the sauna can make you feel a whole lot better. But packing up your gym gear and actually leaving the house when all you want is to watch TV, chill and eat is the biggest challenge of them all.
Additionally, there is some evidence that dark alcohol causes more severe hangovers, that is, bourbon will give you a worse hangover than vodka. One expert says bourbon contains 37 times more toxic compounds than vodka, including nasty organic molecules such as acetone, acetaldehyde, tannins and furfural. A good rule of thumb for liquors is that the clearer they are, the less of these substances they contain.
