Do Photos Prove Young 'Witch' Haunts Churchyard?
NEWCHURCH-IN-PENDLE, Lancashire, England – Eerie photos could be the best evidence yet that the spirit of a young girl haunts the infamous Pendle graveyard. The Lancashire town is among the top 10 spookiest places to live in the UK. Pendle was featured on the TV show Most Haunted and members of the television crew said they were strangled by ghosts. In the spine-chilling images, it appears the spirit is looking out from one of the grave stones. She has a deathly white face, an ice-cold stare from her black eyes and appears to be looking straight into the camera.
The pictures were snapped last week by medium and psychic artist Christine Hamlett, 58, of Northwich, Cheshire. She believes she saw nine-year-old Jennet Device, one of the “witches” who was hanged during the 1612 trials. "I felt a presence in Pendle,” she explains. "You can see the outline of a young girl in the pictures – I think that graveyard is haunted.”
The 12 accused witches lived in the area around Pendle Hill and were charged with the murders of 10 people by witchcraft. Of the 11 who went to trial – nine women and two men – 10 were found guilty and executed by hanging, including Jennet, while one was found not guilty.
"I've always been drawn to the area because of the history and the legends – there's definitely an aura around the place,” Hamlett says. "I felt Jennet when I was there in the graveyard and looking back at the pictures, there's also the shadow of a man in one of them – so that could be the judge. I felt the presence of a young girl in the cemetery and I think it was Jennet. It felt like she was scared and confused - it must have been horrible for such a young girl to go through all of that, she was only nine. The cemetery is steeped in history - you can really feel it when you're there."
Jennet's mother, Elizabeth, allegedly had a devil’s mark where he sucked her blood and was also thought to be responsible for hosting a meeting of witches at Pendle's Malkin Tower. "I invite the spirits to reveal themselves to me and take the photographs – my friends call me the psychic paparazzi,” Hamlett claims.
