The Pillars: Haunted Mansion for Sale
Constructed in the 1880s, the Pillars Estate at 13800 W. Country House Road in Albion, New York, is a Greek Revival-style mansion with a Second Empire tower, situated on 6.2 acres. From the roaring lions on either side of the front steps to spectral children, the old manse is the perfect setting for a ghost story, or two and the Victorian era dwelling and its ghosts can be yours for
The ghostly rumors began when the residence was being renovated to its original grandeur. A family member sitting outside one day saw a child peering out a basement window. Not long after, a workman swore he heard the voice of a child. But the little wraiths aren’t rambling about in the 13,286-square-foot edifice alone, they are accompanied by a classic “woman in white,” who has been spotted lounging in a bedroom. There have also been reports of phantom footsteps heard by people as they ascend and descend the curving staircase. No one knows why these otherworldly beings occupy the Pillars, but they couldn’t have chosen a more beautiful house in which to spend eternity.
According to Cora Goyette, a representative for the property, many original features are still intact, including hand-carved doors, fireplaces, windows, shutters and hardwood floors. “The owner’s family members, craftsmen themselves, came from Scotland to do some of the early renovations, which included all of the ceilings,” she says.
The mansion was converted into apartments in the 1960s, but it has since been returned to a private residence. In addition to six spacious bedrooms and 5½ baths, there’s a ladies’ parlor, gentlemen’s study and tearoom, and according to Goyette, the house “has a real sense of stepping back in time.” In each room, the homeowners were careful to retain (or restore) period details of the historic residence. For example, one bedroom features a wood-burning fireplace and marble mantel, hardwood floor and a chandelier hangs from a ceiling medallion. The portions of the building that received a modern facelift also sparkle. The grand ballroom, one of Goyette’s favorite rooms, was added four years ago. The kitchen upgrade includes stainless-steel appliances and an island with lots of surface space.
For history buffs, the mansion offers an interesting past and claim to (some) fame. It was constructed as a private home and working dairy farm for William Carr. Patricia, Carr’s second wife, moved into the house from New York City in the 1940s and kept a journal of her life in the area, from which her grandchildren published The Long-Legged View by Nikki Carr Tiffany.
Presently, the Pillars has a special-use permit to hold events such as weddings and it is featured on the Haunted History Trail of New York State. Goyette says the house needs “a family seeking a large country home, reminiscent of a bygone era.”
