Children everywhere are thanking Johnny Depp for a new excuse to add into their rotation: a chupacabra attacked me and ate my homework.
The 51-year-old actor was a no-show at a press conference in Tokyo on Tuesday to promote Mordecai — which could use some major overseas promotion judging from last weekend's box office numbers — but it was for a good reason. When speaking with reporters today, Depp said his absence wasn't due to illness, but because he was attacked by a mythical creature.
"I was attacked yesterday morning by a very rarely seen or experienced animal called 'chupacabra.' I fought with it for hours," he joked to a laughing crowd. "They're very persistent, very mean. And I'm pretty sure it came into my suitcase. I threw him off the 23rd floor. So we'll never see him again. Thank you for understanding."
The chupacabra is a legendary cryptid rumored to inhabit parts of the Americas. The name "chupacabra" comes from its rumored habit of attacking and drinking the blood of livestock.
Depp has recently said he's a little weird, so his chupacabra tale seems fitting. Check out four other celebs who claim to believe in mythical creatures.
Charlie Sheen: In 2013, the Anger Management star flew to Scotland to hunt the Loch Ness Monster, which was one of his lifelong goals.
"I went [to Scotland] and spent finally that night with a bottle of whisky in a rowboat on Loch Ness,” Sheen revealed on the Tonight Show. Charlie didn't see anything, but noted "there was an event” on the day he left. “Something happened, there was an event at the top of the water that was crazy.”
During that interview Sheen also revealed he went to Alaska to look for another mythical creature, Kushtaka.
“It’s a shape-shifting half-man half-otter,” he explained. “I didn’t see him. I just read about it and got fascinated and just went.”
Dean Cain: Superman himself hosted Spike TV's new show 10 Million Dollar Bigfoot Bounty, where he led teams on an expedition to see if they could prove Bigfoot's existence.
"I began a complete skeptic, and I will say I’m much less skeptical now," he told OK! magazine. "My brother was a real Sasquatch believer, which is why I bought him the yeti statue in the Skymall catalog when I knew I was doing the show. I would love to be the leader of the expedition that discovered Bigfoot."
Bobcat Goldthwait: The comedian also went on a hunt for Bigfoot. Godthwait joined Bigfoot Field Research Organization President Matt Moneymaker, researchers James "Bobo" Fay and Cliff Barackman, and scientist Ranae Holland to shoot an episode of Animal Planet's Finding Bigfoot. The crew took a trip to the mountainous terrain of rural Sussex County, New Jersey, in search of the mythical creature.
Megan Fox: The Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles actress hasn't pulled a Charlie and gone searching for any creatures, but she certainly thinks they are out there.
"I believe in all of these Irish myths, like leprechauns,” she told Esquire. “Not the pot of gold, not the Lucky Charms leprechauns. But maybe was there something in the traditional sense? I believe that this stuff came from somewhere other than people's imaginations.”
She added that she believes in aliens and the Loch Ness Monster, saying, "There's something to it."
"What distracts me from my reality is Bigfoot," she continued, adding that those type of creatures "are my celebrities."
Stars... they're just like us.
